Chapter 7 - A Meeting of Purpose

Dr. Julian Montgomery was the Chief of Pediatric Pulmonology at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital and the medical director of our foundation’s free respiratory clinic.
At thirty-six, Julian was tall, athletic, with kind hazel eyes, an easy, grounding presence, and a fierce, unyielding dedication to his young patients. He had lost his younger sister to chronic cystic fibrosis during his residency, giving him a profound, empathetic understanding of grief that matched my own.
Julian walked into the office wearing a tailored charcoal blazer and carrying two cups of hot herbal tea, setting one gently onto my desk.
"You've been here since six in the morning, Naomi," Julian smiled softly, sitting in the leather chair across from me. "Take a breath."
"We just approved twenty-four emergency pediatric inhaler grants for families on the South Side, Julian," I replied, a genuine, warm smile touching my lips. "I couldn't sleep until the authorizations were signed."
Julian looked at me with deep, unvarnished admiration.
"Johnny and Gemma would be so incredibly proud of what you've built here, Naomi," Julian said, his voice resonant with sincerity. "You took the darkest tragedy imaginable and turned it into a fortress of hope for thousands of children."
"We built it together, Julian," I murmured softly, meeting his warm gaze.
Julian reached out across the desk, his strong, warm hand resting gently over mine. For the first time in two years, a gentle flutter of warmth ignited in my chest—not replacing the love I held for Johnny, but opening a quiet, tender window toward a future I thought was permanently closed.
"Would you let me take you to dinner tonight, Naomi?" Julian asked gently. "No board agendas. No medical reviews. Just two friends having a quiet meal by the lake."

I looked into his kind, honest eyes, feeling the last remaining walls around my heart soften.
"I would love that, Julian," I said.
