Chapter 6 - The Father Who Had Been Missing Seven Years

Ethan Hail was alive.

Federal facial recognition confirmed a photograph Richard sent.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

Serena stared at the screen for hours.

“He has gray hair.”

Cade sat beside her.

“Seven years.”

“He missed Mara’s first day of school.”

“Yes.”

“Lena’s broken arm.”

“Yes.”

“He missed everything.”

Cade understood.

His own absence was voluntary.

Ethan’s apparently was not.

Richard arranged a meeting.

Old freight yard.

No police.

Naturally, the FBI came anyway.

Cade carried a decoy box.

Serena insisted on coming.

“No.”

She stared at him.

“Try saying that again.”

He sighed.

“Fine.”

“Progress.”

At midnight, Richard arrived in a black sedan.

He looked nearly unchanged.

Silver hair.

Expensive coat.

Polite smile.

A monster wearing manners.

Then another car door opened.

Ethan stepped out.

Serena made a sound Cade would remember forever.

Not a scream.

A broken inhale.

“Ethan.”

He looked toward her.

His face collapsed.

“Serena.”

She ran.

Federal agents nearly reacted.

Cade stopped them.

Serena hit Ethan first.

Hard.

Across the face.

Then she hugged him.

Both fell to their knees.

“You were alive!”

“I’m sorry.”

“You were alive!”

“I’m sorry.”

“Seven years!”

“I couldn't come back.”

“You should have tried!”

“I did.”

Richard watched with amusement.

Cade wanted to kill him.

Instead, he remembered his mother.

Courage over revenge.

“Where’s the evidence?” Richard asked.

Cade held the case.

“First Ethan.”

Richard laughed.

“He’s standing there.”

“Free.”

“He’s been free for years.”

Serena pulled away.

“What?”

Ethan looked ashamed.

Richard continued.

“I threatened his family initially. But after three years, he could have returned.”

Serena stared at Ethan.

“Is that true?”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

The betrayal shifted.

“Why didn't you?”

“Because I had helped him.”

Cade frowned.

“What?”

Ethan explained.

Richard forced him into hiding using debts and threats.

Then offered safety if Ethan maintained financial servers for the network.

Ethan agreed.

Years passed.

Eventually he knew too much.

But he also participated.

“I was ashamed.”

Serena stared.

“So you let us think you were dead because you were ashamed?”

“I told myself it protected you.”

She laughed bitterly.

“Every coward says that.”

Richard smiled.

“Touching.”

Cade looked at him.

“Enough.”

He dropped the case.

Richard stepped forward.

Federal agents moved from hidden positions.

Richard's men reacted.

Gunfire erupted.

Serena dropped.

Cade pulled her behind concrete barriers.

Julian tackled Ethan.

Agents overwhelmed Richard’s guards.

Richard ran toward the rail yard.

Cade followed.

He caught him between freight cars.

Richard pulled a pistol.

Cade stopped.

“You won't shoot me,” Richard said.

“Why?”

“Because you’re still Malcolm’s son.”

Cade stared.

Then smiled faintly.

“No.”

Richard frowned.

“I’m Caroline’s.”

Agents appeared behind him.

Richard turned.

Surrendered.

No dramatic execution.

No revenge.

Just handcuffs.

That hurt Richard more.

Back at the safe house, Ethan faced his daughters.

Lena stood rigid.

Mara cried.

“Dad?”

He knelt.

“Hi, baby.”

“You died.”

“No.”

“Mom said you died.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

He began crying.

“I made bad choices.”

Mara hugged him.

Lena did not.

“You left.”

“Yes.”

“Even when you could come back.”

“Yes.”

“Then you don’t get to act like nothing happened.”

“No.”

Serena watched.

Cade stood beside her.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

“Fair.”

Ethan looked at Serena.

“I don't expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“I just want a chance to know them.”

“That isn’t my decision.”

She looked toward Lena and Mara.

“Theirs.”

Cade felt something shift.

This family was learning.

Nobody owned another person’s forgiveness.

Richard was arrested.

The network began collapsing.

But one question remained.

Why had Richard kept Ethan alive?

The answer came from federal records.

Ethan had built a hidden backup system containing everything.

Richard never found the password.

Only Ethan knew it.

When agents asked, Ethan looked at Serena.

“The password was your birthday.”

She started crying.

“Why?”

“Because even when I was being a coward, I never stopped loving you.”

Serena looked away.

May you like

Love was not enough.

But maybe it was somewhere to start.
