Chapter 6 - The Room Behind the Room

Detective Elena Vega studied the photograph under the cold lights of the police station. She asked Clara exactly when she had found it, who might have known her address, and whether she had handled it. Clara answered what she knew and stopped where her knowledge ended. She had seen enough men at the estate convert certainty into intimidation. She wasn't going to do the same in a different uniform.

Vega explained that the photograph and message were being treated as potential evidence of a threat. A restraining order or criminal charge would depend on facts they could establish. Clara arranged to stay with a friend for several nights, and Tommy's hospital updated his privacy preferences so that information about his care would not be released to strangers.

At the estate, Liam found out about the threat through Iris, not from Clara. His first instinct was to send four armed men to guard her apartment. Iris told him that involving his employees without Clara's permission could endanger the investigation and frighten her further.

"Then what am I supposed to do?" Liam asked.

"Cooperate with the police. Give them access to records. Stop believing that every problem becomes yours if you can afford enough men."

Liam sat with those words until the anger had somewhere else to go. He authorized the release of relevant business and security documents through counsel and asked Iris to tell Clara he would respect her choices. There was no message demanding gratitude.

The forensic review of the estate cameras revealed that the disconnected western unit was part of a wider pattern. Several recordings around the date of Liam's vehicle ambush had been overwritten before their normal retention period. Priya retrieved a backup from an off-site system that Tessa's office hadn't controlled. It showed a contractor entering the service wing with a laptop and later leaving alongside Vaughn Pike, Liam's head of operations.

Leo recognized Vaughn immediately. They had worked together for years. Vaughn handled shipping schedules, drivers, and private security contracts. He also approved the invoices that passed through Tessa's office.

"He told me the west camera had a faulty cable," Leo said.

"Did you check?" Iris asked.

"No."

"Why?"

Leo looked toward Liam, then down at the conference table. "Because this place teaches people that questioning the wrong person can cost them their jobs. I helped teach them."

Liam didn't contradict him. He had used fear to build the organization; the people who now threatened him had learned from the same system.

Iris and the investigators traced the unauthorized access credentials to a contractor paid through a maintenance vendor. The vendor had received unusually large payments after Liam's crash. Separately, company records showed that Tessa and Vaughn had interests in an investment firm positioned to purchase the waterfront properties at a sharply reduced price. Those connections raised questions; they were not, by themselves, proof of an attempted murder. Vega's team pursued the violent attack through its own evidence.

Priya also documented exactly what the backup could not show. There was no image of the person who altered the hospital refusal, and the service-wing camera had no view of Liam's medical equipment. The maintenance case could have contained ordinary tools. Investigators would need invoices, testimony, and corroboration before making a claim about its contents. Leo found that caution maddening; he wanted a single enemy he could confront. Priya told him that certainty acquired too early was how people overlooked the person standing beside the obvious suspect. After she left, Leo made a list of the employees he owed apologies to. The list began with Dana Finch and continued down the page.

At the edge of the garden, the estate's old caretaker was repairing a broken trellis. He'd watched generations of Mercer men come and go, and he seemed more concerned with the roses than the police cars at the gate. Leo asked whether the caretaker had noticed anything on the afternoon the camera failed. The man said he'd been off duty and pointed Leo toward the published work schedule. Leo resisted the urge to pressure him for a more useful answer. He requested the schedule through the appropriate process instead.

Clara returned to the estate only after she had spoken with Vega and her own adviser about safety. She came during the day, with a clear departure time, and found Liam sitting beside the western window. Priya had finished a temporary security upgrade. The room was still private, but the curtains no longer needed to be treated as a sacred command.

"I heard about the threat," he said.

"I made a report. I'm safe tonight. Beyond that, I won't pretend to know."

"Good."

She raised an eyebrow. "Good?"

"You went to somebody trained to handle it instead of asking my men. That's what you should've done."

Clara set down her bag. "Are you feeling all right?"

He almost smiled. "My therapist says I have a long way to go."

They completed his routine assessment. His wound was being followed by the treating team, and he was making incremental progress with mobility. He complained about every exercise, completed most of them, and accepted that an infection couldn't be bullied into healing faster.

Near the end of the appointment, he asked Clara to open the blinds a few inches.

"Do you want the room facing the garden?" she asked.

"I want to know what I've been hiding from."

She checked that Priya's safety guidance allowed it, then drew the fabric aside. Late sunlight cut across the floor. Dust moved through the pale beam, ordinary and indifferent. Liam looked at the trees, at the gravel drive, at a gardener wrestling with a hose that had tangled around a stone urn.

"I thought the world outside this window had become dangerous," he said. "Maybe it was the room."

"Both things can be true," Clara answered.

He watched the light until she finished her notes. Then Leo entered with an urgent call from Iris.

Investigators had obtained a recording of a meeting about the waterfront sale. Tessa could be heard telling Vaughn, "Keep Mercer medically unavailable until the transfer closes."

The recording established a chilling instruction. It did not yet establish what, if anything, they had done to carry it out.

Liam looked at his healing leg, then at the bright strip of window. "Get every record to Vega," he said. "Including the ones that make me look bad."
