THE NINETY-DAY RECKONING / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Hospital's Fatal ErrorMy fingers trembled as I pressed the phone against my ear, dialing the direct line of Dr. Edward Vance, the Chief of Oncology at Memorial Health.

He answered on the very first ring.

“Victoria? Thank God,” Dr. Vance gasped, his voice tight with an overwhelming mixture of panic and sheer professional terror. “Are you somewhere private?”

“I am in my room, Edward,” I said, keeping my tone unnaturally level. “What is going on?”

“Victoria... I don't even know how to begin saying this,” Vance stammered, papers rustling wildly in the background. “We ran a full audit of our laboratory processing files this morning following a systemic database glitch. The stage-four pancreatic tissue biopsy... the scan that showed terminal lesions...”

He took a deep, shaky breath.

“It wasn't yours, Victoria. A lab technician swapped the patient identification barcodes on your sample with a patient named Victoria Vance-no, Vickers. A woman who passed away forty-eight hours ago. Your actual MRI and blood panel came back ninety minutes ago.”

My heart hammered violently against my ribs. “What are my actual results, Edward?”

“You don't have cancer, Victoria,” Dr. Vance declared, his voice breaking with profound relief. “You have a severe, non-lethal autoimmune inflammation caused by prolonged exposure to an environmental toxin—likely heavy metals or low-grade poison—which mimicked localized tissue swelling. You are completely cancer-free. With proper detox therapy, you will make a full recovery within six weeks.”

I sat frozen on the edge of my bed. I wasn't dying. The ninety-day clock ticking in my head was a lie.

An environmental toxin...

The words echoed in my mind. For the past six months, Richard had insisted on personally bringing me a specialized 'herbal health tea' every single night before bed—a tea brewed by his personal nutritionist.

The cold-blooded bastard wasn't just waiting for me to die. He had been actively accelerating the process, using the false diagnosis as a perfect cover to slowly poison me while he installed his pregnant mistress in my home.

“Victoria? Are you still there?” Dr. Vance asked anxiously. “Should I send an ambulance to bring you in for immediate blood washing?”

I looked at the closed bedroom door. Through the wood, I could hear Richard and Sienna laughing near the pool, discussing how they would spend my family's fortune.

“No, Edward,” I whispered, a dark, lethal smile spreading across my face for the first time in years. “Do not update my official medical portal. Keep the erroneous stage-four diagnosis active in the system. Issue a formal restriction on my file so no one—especially my husband—can access the updated records without my written consent.”

“Victoria... what are you planning?” Vance asked, sounding terrified.

“I am going to let my husband prepare for my funeral,” I answered softly. “And then I am going to bury him.”
