Code Two

Olivia Reed hit the kitchen floor hard enough to taste blood.
The impact knocked the air from her lungs. One shoulder slammed against the polished tile, and for a heartbeat the world dissolved into blurred lights and ringing silence. Somewhere nearby, a wineglass rolled in a slow circle before tipping onto its side.
Across the kitchen, eight-year-old Ava stood frozen.
Her small hands clutched the sleeve of her pink sleep dress, her wide brown eyes fixed on her mother.
Olivia didn't dare look toward Travis.
She already knew where he was.
She could hear his breathing.
Controlled.
Heavy.
Waiting.
For years she had learned to recognize the dangerous quiet that always came before another explosion.
Instead of speaking, Olivia slowly raised two trembling fingers.
A tiny movement.
Almost invisible.
Code two.
Months earlier, she had invented the code during what she pretended was a game.
"If Mommy ever shows you two fingers," she had whispered while they baked cookies together one Saturday afternoon, "you don't ask questions. You go to the wall intercom and press these buttons exactly like we practiced."
Ava had laughed.
"Like spies?"
"Exactly like spies."
"Will we ever need it?"
Olivia smiled back then.
"I hope not."
Now hope had run out.
Ava looked at the two fingers.
Recognition flashed across her frightened face.
Without a word, she turned and sprinted toward the wall-mounted intercom beside the pantry.
The sound of her bare feet striking the polished floor echoed through the enormous kitchen.
Only then did Travis move.
"What are you doing?"
His voice exploded through the room.
Ava didn't answer.
She reached the keypad and began pressing the emergency sequence with shaking fingers.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
The electronic tones seemed impossibly loud.
Travis lunged forward.
Olivia forced herself onto one elbow despite the pain tearing through her ribs.
"Ava!"
Her daughter pressed another button.
Travis closed the distance in three long strides.
"Get away from that!"
Ava backed against the wall.
"No!"
Her voice cracked.
One hand covered the keypad while the other searched blindly across the narrow counter beside the intercom.
Her fingers touched something small.
Cold metal.
The pepper spray.
Olivia had bought it weeks earlier after telling herself it was only for peace of mind.
She had almost thrown it away twice.
Now Ava wrapped both hands around it.
"Don't come near me!"
Travis reached for her wrist.
A sharp hiss split the room.
A cloud of orange spray burst into his face.
He screamed.
"My eyes!"
He stumbled backward, clawing at his face as tears streamed down his cheeks.
The kitchen filled with coughing and chaos.
Olivia saw her chance.
Ignoring the agony in her side, she drove her heel into Travis's shin.
He lost his balance.
His shoulder struck the edge of the stone island before the rest of him crashed onto the floor with a sickening thud.
Silence.
Only breathing.
Heavy.
Uneven.
Then the intercom crackled to life.
"This is Seattle Residential Emergency Dispatch. What is your emergency?"
Ava's chest rose and fell rapidly.
She looked at her mother.
Olivia nodded once.
"My name is Ava Reed," she whispered into the speaker. "My mom needs help. Please send the police."
The dispatcher remained calm.
"Are you safe right now?"
Ava looked toward Travis.
He was still on the floor, groaning and rubbing his burning eyes.
"I... I don't know."
"We're sending officers immediately. Stay where you are if you can."
A distant siren echoed somewhere beyond the mansion walls.
For the first time in years, Olivia allowed herself to believe they might survive the night.
Travis slowly lowered his hands.
His eyes were red and swollen.
He looked directly at Olivia.
"You've destroyed everything."
His voice was quieter than before.
That frightened her more than his shouting ever had.
"No," Olivia answered, pulling Ava close with her uninjured arm.
"You did."
Outside, the sirens grew louder.
Closer.
Neither mother nor daughter moved.

They simply held each other in the cold light of the kitchen while the sound of approaching help echoed through the silent mansion.
The night that had begun with fear was no longer under Travis Reed's control.
