Chapter 15 - The Price of Silence| Vivian's attorney advised her to stop contacting Adrian.

She ignored the advice.
She sent him long messages in the middle of the night, reminding him of the promises he had made and insisting that she had never intended for Sophie to be harmed.
When he did not respond, she began sending shorter ones.
You can't leave me to face this alone.
We both made mistakes.
Please tell me you still care.
Adrian read the messages without replying.
Eventually, Vivian went to his office.
His assistant tried to stop her, but Vivian pushed past the reception desk and entered his conference room while he was reviewing documents with two executives.
“We need to talk.”
Adrian looked up.
“Not here.”
“Then tell me where.”
“Vivian, leave.”
The executives exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Vivian's face reddened.
“You can't pretend I don't exist.”
“I can't discuss this at work.”
“You were perfectly happy discussing our future when it suited you.”
Adrian stood.
“This meeting is over.”
The executives gathered their papers and left.
When the door closed, Vivian stepped closer.
“You said you loved me.”
“I did.”
“You said Claire didn't matter anymore.”
“I was lying to you, too.”
She stared at him.
“Why would you say that?”
“Because I wanted you to stay.”
“And now?”
“Now I want the truth.”
Vivian laughed bitterly.
“The truth? You want to act like the honest one now?”
“No.”
He looked exhausted.
“I want to stop pretending.”
She folded her arms.
“You think admitting what happened will make you a better man?”
“No.”
“Then what are you trying to achieve?”
“Nothing. I'm trying to stop making things worse.”
Vivian's eyes filled with tears.
“If you tell the police how much I pressured you, you'll destroy my life.”
“I already told them.”
Her expression changed.
“You did what?”
“I told them about the trip and the argument.”
“You promised you would protect me.”
“I know.”
“Then how can you do this?”
Adrian looked at her for a long time.
“Because I can't protect you by lying about what happened to my daughter.”
Vivian's mouth opened, but no words came.
He continued.
“I won't tell the police what to conclude. I won't ask them to punish you, and I won't ask them to spare you. I will answer their questions honestly.”
“You're choosing Claire.”
“No.”
“Then who?”
He looked toward the window.
“I'm choosing not to hide anymore.”
Vivian shook her head.
“You're a coward.”
“Maybe I was.”
She picked up her bag.
“I hope you spend the rest of your life remembering what you lost.”
Adrian met her gaze.
“I will.”
She left.
That evening, Adrian returned home and found the house exactly as Claire had left it. He had refused to move anything because he feared that changing the rooms would mean accepting that his family was gone.
But the house had already changed.
It no longer felt like a place waiting for Claire to return. It felt like a museum of choices he could not undo.
He walked into Sophie's bedroom and opened the wardrobe.
The drawing was still there.
Daddy is always going somewhere.
He took it down carefully and placed it inside a folder with Sophie's letter and the other things he had found.
Then he sat on the floor and made a decision.
He would stop asking Claire to forgive him.
He would stop treating her silence as an obstacle to overcome.
And he would stop using his grief as proof that he deserved another chance.
He would tell the truth, accept the consequences, and learn to live with the fact that doing the right thing now could not repair the harm he had caused before.
It was not redemption.
May you like
Not yet.
It was simply the first honest choice he had made in a long time.
