Chapter 4 - The Panic in South BeachAt 8:00 AM on New Year’s Day, the warm sun was shining bright over the luxury pool deck at the W South Beach Hotel in Miami.

Eleanor, Chloe, and Mark sat under a shaded cabana, surrounded by empty cocktail glasses and breakfast platters, looking furious as their hotel waiter handed them a declined billing receipt for the second time.
“What do you mean the card is still declined?!” Eleanor shrieked, slamming her jewel-encrusted hand onto the glass table. “Do you know who I am?! My son is David Miller, the Vice President of Sterling Industrial! He makes six hundred thousand dollars a year!”
“I apologize, ma'am,” the waiter said politely, holding the credit card reader. “The bank portal indicates that the primary account holder has canceled all user permissions and flagged the account for suspected fraudulent activity.”
Mark, my brother-in-law, swallowed hard, his face going pale. “Did you call David?”
“I texted him five times!” Chloe snapped, typing furiously on her phone. “He’s not answering! He’s probably still asleep in Germany!”
Before Chloe could finish her sentence, her phone screen lit up with an incoming call from an unknown New York landline.
Chloe answered instantly on speakerphone. “David?! Is that you?! Why did you block the cards?! We’re stuck at the hotel front desk in Miami, and they won't let us check out!”
A cold, calm, unfamiliar voice answered through the speaker.
“This is Detective Raymond Cruz, NYPD 78th Precinct in Brooklyn.”
Eleanor snatched the phone from Chloe’s hand, her tone instantly turning arrogant. “Officer? What is this about? Is there a problem at David’s apartment? Did that lazy girl leave the door unlocked again?”
“Mrs. Eleanor Miller,” Detective Cruz stated with icy professionalism. “I am currently standing in Room 402 at New York-Presbyterian Hospital beside your son, David. Your daughter-in-law, Maya Miller, is currently in critical surgery for a severe, life-threatening infection caused by acute physical neglect.”
Eleanor froze, the color draining from her face. “What... what are you talking about? She was fine when we left!”
“We have secured four hundred hours of high-definition security camera footage from the Park Slope residence,” Detective Cruz continued. “Documenting criminal neglect of a vulnerable adult, felony child endangerment, and grand larceny involving over twenty thousand dollars in stolen medical funds.”
Mark gasped, dropping his champagne glass onto the deck tile, where it shattered into powder.

“A felony warrant for the arrest of Eleanor Miller, Chloe Vance, and Mark Vance has been issued by the Kings County District Attorney,” Cruz declared firmly. “Miami-Dade Police officers are entering your hotel lobby right now to execute the warrant. Stay where you are.”
Eleanor looked up in sheer horror as three uniformed Miami-Dade police officers marched across the pool deck directly toward their cabana, holding steel handcuffs.
