Chapter 1

Chapter 1
The mother stopped breathing for a second.
"No..." she whispered. "Don't do this."
The daughter didn't answer.
She simply walked to the front door and opened it.
A man was standing outside.
Tall. In his early fifties. Wearing a dark overcoat. His face was pale.
He didn't look victorious.
He looked exhausted.
Like someone who had spent far too many years running from the past.
The father recognized him instantly.
"Daniel?"
The entire room froze.
The mother's eyes slowly closed.
Because the secret she had buried for nearly two decades had just walked back into her life.
Daniel swallowed hard.
"I'm sorry," he said quietly.
The mother stepped forward.
"Leave."
"I can't do that anymore."
The father looked from Daniel to his wife, completely confused.
"What's going on?"
The daughter folded her arms.
"Tell him."
Daniel lowered his head.
"Eighteen years ago... your wife and I had an affair."
Silence exploded across the room.
The daughter wasn't surprised.
The father was.
He took one step back.
Then another.
"Eighteen years?"
His eyes moved to his daughter.
Then to his wife.
Then back to Daniel.
Suddenly, a horrifying possibility began to take shape in his mind.
The same fear that had haunted the mother for almost twenty years.
"No..."
The word barely escaped his lips.
"No..."
The mother burst into tears.
"Please..."
"Tell me it's not true."
Daniel slowly closed his eyes.
Before anyone else could speak, the daughter broke the silence.
"I took a DNA test two months ago."
The father's knees nearly gave out.
"What?"
She raised her phone.
"Because I found old messages. I found photographs. I found letters hidden in the attic."
Her eyes locked onto her mother.
"And I needed to know who I really was."
The father could barely breathe.
"What did the test say?"
No one answered.
And somehow...
That silence hurt even more than the truth itself.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
"She's my biological daughter."
The mother collapsed onto the couch.
May you like
The father stood completely still.
Like a statue that had just shattered from the inside.
