Chapter 18 - The Day My Husband Finally Admitted Everything

|
Daniel asked to meet me at Andrea's office.
I agreed because my attorney would be present.
He arrived looking exhausted.
His beard had grown in.
His shirt was wrinkled.
For the first time since losing his job, he no longer resembled the confident salesman who left our house every morning.
He sat across from me.
Andrea explained that the meeting was for discussing our immediate financial concerns and that no agreement would be made without proper review.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“Claire, I never wanted any of this.”
I waited.
“I thought I could fix everything before you found out.”
“You mean before I discovered you were unemployed?”
He nodded.
“And the loans?”
“Yes.”
“And your sister's business?”
His eyes filled.
“Yes.”
I leaned forward.
“Why, Daniel?”
He looked at his hands.
“Because everyone needed me.”
The answer was so simple that it almost made me angry again.
“Your family needed you to look successful.”
He nodded.
“Dad expected me to handle everything. Rebecca was about to lose her business. Mom kept saying we couldn't let the family fall apart.”
“So you put our house at risk.”
He swallowed.
“I thought I'd get another job. I thought I could repay it.”
“Did you sign my name?”
The question hung between us.
Daniel looked at Andrea.
She said nothing.
Finally, he whispered:
“I used the home tablet to complete the application.”
My chest tightened.
“And the authorization code?”
He nodded.
“The one I told you was for insurance.”
I closed my eyes.
He had done it deliberately.
It wasn't a misunderstanding.
It wasn't a bookkeeping error.
He had used my trust to access money without my informed consent.
“Did Rebecca know?”
“She knew I was borrowing.”
“Did she know I hadn't agreed?”
Daniel hesitated.
“I don't know what she believed.”
“Did Evelyn know?”
His eyes dropped.
“Yes.”
The room went very quiet.
I looked at him.
“What did your mother tell you?”
Daniel rubbed his face.
“She said you would forgive me once the money was repaid.”
I felt something inside me go still.
“And you believed her?”
“I needed to believe her.”
Andrea leaned forward.
“Daniel, we'll need complete records of all advances, transfers, and communications related to the account.”
He nodded weakly.
Then he looked at me.
“Claire, please. We can still save our marriage.”
I stared at the man I'd loved for sixteen years.
“I didn't marry you because you made money.”
He began crying.
“I know.”
“I married you because I thought I could trust you.”
He covered his face.
I waited until he looked up.
“Do you understand what you've done to Sophie?”
He shook his head.
“She heard you defend your sister after Rebecca hit me. She heard you ask me to apologize. And now she knows you've been hiding things from us.”
Daniel whispered:
“I love her.”
“Then start acting like a father who deserves her trust.”
For several moments, he said nothing.
Finally, he asked:
“Are you divorcing me?”
I looked toward Andrea.
Then back at Daniel.
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
May you like
And for the first time, the consequences of his decisions belonged to him.
Not to me.
