Chapter 1 - THE SHATTERED GLASS AND THE HIDDEN TRUST

The glass door shattered before I understood my own son had pushed me through it. As blood slid from my temple onto my blouse, Ethan looked down at me and said, “Now maybe you’ll finally learn where you belong.” For three years, I had lived quietly in the guest cottage behind Ethan’s sprawling house in Connecticut. He told everyone he was supporting his “broke, dependent mother,” while his wife, Vanessa, repeated it at dinner parties with a sad little smile. The truth was far different. My husband had built a 21 million dollar trust to protect the family’s future from anyone who mistook blood for permission. After he died, I let Ethan believe the fortune had vanished in bad investments to test his genuine character—a test he brutally failed when he and Vanessa demanded I sign over the cottage land and threw me through a glass patio door.
