Chapter 5 - Five Words That Change Everything

Ethan slowly knelt down on the hardwood floor, his hand reaching out with agonizing slowness to pick up the fallen photograph. The paper was worn at the edges, bearing the faint scent of lavender and dried ink that had belonged exclusively to his mother, Evelyn Caldwell. He turned the photograph over, his eyes scanning his mother’s handwriting. But it wasn't just a friendly note or a signature. Beneath the date, scrawled in urgent, shaky lines during his mother's final days, were five terrifying words: She was there when I died. Ethan stared at the card until the letters blurred into meaningless ink. His mind raced back to the day his mother passed away in her private hospice suite—a death the family doctors had ruled as heart failure resulting from advanced illness. The family had been downstairs in the corridor, barred from entering due to strict quarantine protocols enforced by their corporate family lawyer, Marcus Vance. Yet here, in the possession of a homeless nurse he had picked up off the street on a whim, was undeniable proof of a connection that spanned the darkest, most secretive period of his family's history. "Where did you get this?" Ethan demanded, his voice dropping to a harsh, dangerous whisper that rattled the quiet room. Sarah shrank back against the side of the bed, her eyes wide with terror and guilt. She pulled her knees to her chest, wrapping her arms around herself as the last remnants of her defenses crumbled away. "I didn't steal them, Mr. Caldwell," she choked out through her tears. "Your mother gave them to me. Because she knew no one else in your world was listening."
