Chapter 18 - THE FINAL CONFRONTATION|

Richard Cole was located by investigators before he could leave the airfield.

He was not arrested on the strength of a rumor or an angry accusation. The authorities had been gathering evidence through the appropriate legal process, and his attempted departure became relevant only alongside the documents and transactions already under examination.

The briefcase contained contracts, account statements, and correspondence connected to Northbridge Holdings.

Some records were legitimate.

Others appeared to contradict filings Richard had previously submitted.

The material was preserved for forensic review.

When Nathan informed Victoria, she sat quietly for several minutes.

“Is it over?”

“No,” he replied. “It's a significant development, but we still need to establish what happened and who was responsible for each transaction.”

Victoria understood.

She had spent weeks wanting a single moment when everything would become simple. Richard would be exposed, Alexander would confess, and the years of betrayal would suddenly make sense.

Real life was less satisfying.

The evidence had to be examined. Witnesses had to be interviewed. The ownership disputes would take time.

But the truth was finally becoming harder to conceal.

Alexander agreed to provide additional records through his legal counsel. His cooperation did not guarantee immunity or erase any potential responsibility. It simply allowed investigators to compare his account with the available evidence.

One evening, he called Victoria.

“I need to tell you something about the night I first confronted you.”

She almost ended the call.

Then she listened.

“When I told you about Sophia, I thought the truth would make me feel better. I thought admitting the affair meant I had done something honorable.”

Victoria stared at the wall.

“You wanted credit for telling me after three years of lying.”

“Yes.”

“And when I asked for a divorce, you laughed.”

“I did.”

“Why?”

“Because I believed you would never leave.”

His honesty hurt more than another excuse would have.

Alexander continued.

“I thought everything I had built made me indispensable. I thought you needed me as much as I needed you.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“I needed a husband who respected me. I didn't need an empire.”

“I know that now.”

“No. You know it because I left.”

He was silent.

Then he said, “You're right.”

For once, she did not have to fight him to acknowledge the truth.

But acknowledgment could not repair the damage.

“I hope you become a better man, Alexander,” she said. “I truly do. But that work is yours. It isn't my responsibility to stay while you do it.”

“I understand.”

She ended the call.

The following week, investigators completed a preliminary review of the documents recovered from Richard's briefcase.

Several messages linked him to the disputed filings. Others suggested that he had directed transactions without obtaining the approvals required under the original business arrangements.

The evidence also indicated that some transfers had benefited companies controlled by Richard himself.

That distinction was crucial.

The case was no longer simply about an unfaithful husband or a mistress who had signed documents she did not understand.

It concerned a complex financial arrangement in which authority, ownership, and consent had been deliberately obscured.

Victoria's name had been used to create the appearance of approval.

The original partnership records offered a possible explanation for why.

But one final question remained.

Who had altered the Continuity Agreement?

The forensic review found that the version containing Victoria's signature had been assembled from pages produced at different times. The witness section had also been modified.

The original archive copy lacked the suspicious note about keeping both principals unaware.

Someone had added it later.

And the document history pointed to a computer used by Richard's office.

For the first time, Victoria felt that the investigation had reached the center of the deception.

Richard had not merely inherited a dangerous arrangement.

He had reshaped it to his advantage.

Yet when Nathan delivered the report, he warned her that the most important hearing was still ahead.

Because the legal challenge to the original partnership would require testimony from both Alexander and Victoria.

And for the first time since their separation, they would have to stand in the same room and tell the truth about what they knew.
