Chapter 17 - THE EMPIRE HE CHOSE TO DESTROYDeclan had spent years building a criminal empire.

Now he faced a choice: preserve it and risk allowing the same corruption to survive, or dismantle it and lose the power that had defined him.
The federal investigation had uncovered illegal gambling operations, fraudulent debt collections, bribery, and financial transfers hidden through shell companies.
Declan could have fought the charges.
He could have used his influence to delay the investigation, intimidate witnesses, and protect the men who had served him.
Instead, he called an emergency meeting.
Representatives from the legitimate businesses gathered in the mansion's conference room. Lawyers sat along the walls. Security officers stood near the doors.
Declan entered without his usual entourage.
“I know many of you believe the Knox organization is untouchable,” he began. “You believe our money can solve every problem and our reputation can silence every witness.”
Nobody spoke.
“You're wrong.”
He placed a stack of documents on the table.
“These records show how our criminal operations have harmed innocent people. Some of you knew. Some of you suspected. Others chose not to ask questions because the profits were too good.”
A businessman near the window stood.
“Are you threatening us?”
“No. I'm telling you what happens next.”
Declan announced that he would cooperate with prosecutors, surrender control of the illegal operations, and submit the legitimate businesses to an independent audit.
Several executives erupted in protest.
“You'll destroy the Knox name!”
“You'll hand everything to the government!”
“Your father would never allow this!”
Declan waited until the room quieted.
“My father tried to change the organization. He was killed because he trusted the wrong people. I will not repeat his mistake.”
A man at the far end of the table leaned forward.
“And what happens to us?”
“You will be investigated. If you committed crimes, you will answer for them. If you built legitimate businesses, you will have the opportunity to prove it.”
The meeting ended in chaos.
Some executives resigned. Others threatened lawsuits. A few quietly offered to cooperate.
For the first time, Declan did not attempt to control every outcome.
He allowed the consequences to unfold.
Meanwhile, Tommy began attending counseling and working with a financial recovery program. He returned to the repair shop and slowly rebuilt his confidence.
One evening, he approached Declan in the garage.
“I owe you an apology.”
Declan looked up from the documents he was reviewing.
“For what?”
“For the way I spoke to you when I arrived. I blamed you for everything.”
“You had every reason to.”
“I made mistakes too. I gambled. I lied to Clary. I thought I could fix everything with one lucky win.”
Declan set the papers aside.
“You're young. You made a bad choice. What matters is what you do next.”
Tommy nodded.
“I want to pay back what I owe.”
“Your sister doesn't owe a dollar. The original debt was manipulated.”
“I know. But I want to earn my own money and help people who get trapped like I did.”
Declan studied him.
“That sounds like a good place to start.”
Tommy smiled faintly.
Then he asked, “Do you think you'll ever be happy?”
The question caught Declan off guard.
“I don't know.”
“You should try. Clary deserves someone who isn't always waiting for the next disaster.”
Declan almost laughed.
“You sound remarkably wise for a man who once borrowed twenty thousand dollars to gamble.”
Tommy grinned.
“I'm working on it.”
Later that night, Declan found Clary in the music room.
She was sitting at the piano, playing the melody he had first heard in the bathroom.
He stood quietly until she finished.
“Why did you stop singing that night?” he asked.
She looked up.
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Of everything.”
He sat beside her.
“Would you sing it again?”
Clary smiled.
“Only if you promise not to abandon another five hundred guests.”
“I make no promises about future birthdays.”
She laughed and began singing.
This time, there were no tears.
When the song ended, Declan kissed her forehead.
For a moment, the future seemed possible.
Then a letter arrived from the prosecutor.
Victor had identified the final conspirator.
It was someone who had been present at Declan's birthday celebration.
May you like
Someone who had watched him leave the ballroom to follow Clary's voice.
And someone who had been waiting patiently for the Knox empire to collapse.
