Chapter 7 - What Really Happened at Bellini House

St. Gabriel’s was real.

Private neurological rehabilitation facility outside Portland.

Patient admitted two years earlier under name Nicholas Mercer.

Ava nearly collapsed when she heard.

Mercer.

Her surname.

Nico had held onto one piece.

They drove north.

No convoy.

No family spectacle.

Luca.

Ava.

Lily.

Mateo.

Police liaison.

At facility, doctor warned them.

“Traumatic brain injury. Memory impairment. Some periods of clarity.”

“What happened?”

“He arrived after severe head trauma and prolonged untreated injuries.”

“Who brought him?”

“Anonymous medical transport.”

Paid cash.

Daniel.

Why keep him alive?

Because Nico possessed account access only he remembered.

Daniel tried extracting.

Eventually injury worsened.

Dumped him into medical care under false name.

The man in garden looked older than Luca remembered.

Thin.

Scar across temple.

Dark hair touched with gray.

He sat watching trees.

Ava stopped ten feet away.

“Nico.”

Nothing.

She cried silently.

Lily held her hand.

Then child walked closer.

“Nico?”

He turned.

Looked at her.

No recognition.

Luca’s throat closed.

Ava knelt.

“Hi.”

The man smiled politely.

“Hello.”

Her face broke.

“My name is Ava.”

He repeated.

“Ava.”

Something flickered.

Then Lily held out rabbit.

Nico stared.

His eyes changed.

“Bunny.”

Ava gasped.

“You know it?”

He touched one ear.

Then whispered:

“Yellow coat.”

Lily wore yellow coat.

Memory fragments.

He looked at Ava.

Tears formed.

“Rain?”

Ava nodded.

“We met in rain.”

He closed eyes.

Then one word:

“Lily.”

The child smiled.

“Yes.”

Ava collapsed against him.

Nico froze.

Then slowly wrapped one arm around her.

Luca looked away.

His brother alive.

Not restored.

But alive.

Recovery took months.

Memory returned unevenly.

Bellini House came back first.

Nico had arranged meeting with Salvatore.

Mateo arrived.

Unknown shooter—Gavin Cross—followed Daniel’s orders.

Gavin planned kill Nico and frame Salvatore.

Shots.

Nico escaped through rear, wounded.

Salvatore found him.

They staged death using Gavin’s body after Gavin died in fire caused by struggle.

Not noble.

Illegal.

Desperate.

Then Nico fled Canada.

Gathered evidence.

Daniel found him through intercepted package.

Kidnapped.

Maria discovered Daniel’s betrayal.

Confronted him.

He poisoned her medication to mimic stroke.

Cassandra had suspected but no proof.

All threads.

Finally.

Nico remembered something else.

Lucia.

Luca sat beside him.

“What?”

“She knew.”

“About Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“Before cancer?”

“Near end.”

“Why not tell me?”

Nico looked at brother.

“Because she was afraid what you'd do.”

Luca laughed bitterly.

Of course.

Nico continued:

“She thought if you killed Daniel, you’d never become free.”

That hurt.

Lucia understood him.

Maybe more than he understood himself.

“She wanted evidence.”

“Did she find it?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Nico pointed at Lily’s rabbit.

No.

Already memory card.

“Not card.”

He struggled.

“Bellini.”

“House?”

“Yes.”

Hidden.

They returned under warrant.

Bellini House searched thoroughly.

Nico directed from memory.

Fireplace.

Loose stone.

Inside:

Lucia’s ledger.

Names.

Routes.

Payments.

Daniel.

Maria.

Salvatore involvement.

Anthony approvals.

Cassandra transfers.

Mateo credential theft.

Everything.

Also letters.

Lucia to Luca.

One remained sealed.

He opened alone.

Luca,

If you found this, then you finally know enough to hate all of us.

Please don't.

Hate is another way the family keeps you.

He stopped.

Then continued.

I loved you before you became the man you think everyone needed.

I loved you after too.

But I was always waiting for you to understand that fear is not respect, secrecy is not loyalty, and blood is not permission.

Nico may find the truth before you.

If he does, listen to him.

And if there is ever a child in front of you who needs protection, protect the child before the name.

Luca cried.

Alone.

No shame.

When he returned, Lily was drawing.

Ava sat with Nico.

His brother looked up.

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Luca almost laughed.

Nico’s memory of humor survived.

Evidence turned over to federal investigators.

Not hidden.

Not burned.

Not negotiated privately.

Luca’s lawyers panicked.

“You are implicating your own companies.”

“Yes.”

“You could face charges.”

“Yes.”

“Asset seizure.”

“Yes.”

“Loss of control.”

“Yes.”

“You understand?”

Luca looked through glass at Lily and Nico.

May you like

“Yes.”

For once, protection meant telling truth.
