Chapter 19 - THE FALL OF THE ROMANO EMPIRE

The evidence reached federal investigators before dawn.
By noon, Victor Russo's financial network had begun to collapse. Accounts were frozen. Business associates were questioned. Several officials resigned rather than explain the transfers recorded in Michael Hayes's ledger.
Bianca was arrested at a private airport while attempting to leave the country.
She requested to speak with Dante.
He refused.
Instead, he provided investigators with the remaining records and agreed to testify about the years he had helped conceal his father's crimes.
The decision fractured the Romano organization.
Some men called him a traitor. Others quietly surrendered their weapons and offered testimony of their own. Marco remained at his side, determined to dismantle the parts of the organization that had survived through fear.
Victor was found at the lake house after Sofia managed to alert a nearby caretaker. He was arrested without a public confrontation, but his expression remained calm as officers escorted him away.
"You think this ends with me?" he called to Dante. "You have no idea how many people depend on this empire."
Dante stood on the wet driveway.
"Then they'll have to find another way to live."
For the first time in his life, he meant it.
Three weeks later, Emma gave birth to a healthy daughter.
Rosa stood beside her during labor. Sofia arrived after receiving permission from Emma, and the two women cried together when the baby finally filled the room with her first furious wail.
Emma named her Lily.
Dante waited outside the maternity ward.
He had asked for nothing. He had not demanded a photograph or insisted on being present. He had simply told Emma that he would respect whatever decision she made.
When the nurse finally invited him inside, he entered slowly.
Emma held Lily against her chest.
Dante stopped several feet from the bed.
"She's beautiful," he whispered.
"She is."
"May I hold her?"
Emma studied him for a long moment.
"Sit down first."
He obeyed.
When she placed Lily in his arms, his hands trembled.
The child opened her eyes, yawned, and settled against his chest.
Dante began to cry.
Emma watched him silently.
She could recognize genuine remorse. She could also recognize that remorse did not automatically restore trust.
"I won't ask you to come home," Dante said. "I won't ask you to forgive me."
"Good."
He looked down at Lily.
"I'll spend the rest of my life proving that I can be someone she doesn't have to fear."
Emma turned toward the window.
"Start by being honest. Even when the truth costs you everything."
Dante nodded.
For once, he had no argument.
And when he left the hospital that evening, he did not take Lily with him.
May you like
He left her with her mother.
It was the first right decision he had made in years.
