Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Called My Husband Hers|

The first thing I noticed was the blood.

The second was the woman holding my husband’s hand.

“Doctor, please save my husband!” she sobbed. “Our baby can’t grow up without a father!”

For one terrible second, the emergency department seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

The unconscious man on the stretcher was Ethan Blackwood, my husband of five years, the billionaire businessman whose name could silence an entire room in Chicago. At thirty-five, he controlled shipping companies, luxury hotels, private security firms, and a criminal empire that most people only whispered about.

I was Claire Bennett Blackwood, thirty-four, a trauma surgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I had spent fifteen years learning how to keep my hands steady when someone was dying.

Tonight, I had to operate on the man who had promised never to break my heart.

“Pressure is dropping!” a paramedic shouted.

“Get him into Trauma One,” I ordered. “Two units of O-negative blood. I want a portable chest X-ray and a surgical team standing by.”

The pregnant woman clung to Ethan’s fingers.

“Baby, please. You promised you would never leave me.”

Her cream-colored dress was soaked from the storm. One hand rested protectively over her five-month pregnant belly.

Then she looked at me.

“Please, Doctor. He’s my husband.”

I stared at her.

“Your husband?”

She nodded desperately.

“Ethan Blackwood. We’re married. I’m carrying his child.”

A nurse beside me went completely still.

One of the bodyguards following the woman suddenly lowered his eyes.

“Mrs. Blackwood,” he whispered.

The woman turned toward him.

“Why did you call her that?”

I removed my wedding ring from beneath my surgical glove and placed it on the counter.

“Because,” I said, forcing my voice to remain professional, “I am Ethan Blackwood’s legal wife.”

The woman’s lips parted.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Ethan’s heart monitor shrieked.

“Doctor!” someone shouted.

I turned back to the bed.

“Get me the ultrasound. Now!”

Whatever Ethan had done, whatever secret he had hidden, I could confront it later. I would not allow my personal life to interfere with the patient lying in front of me.

As we rushed him toward the operating room, the woman tried to follow.

Security stopped her at the doors.

She screamed Ethan’s name until the doors closed between them.

Inside the operating room, I focused on the bleeding inside his abdomen and the pressure building around his brain. My hands moved automatically, guided by training and instinct.

But one question kept returning.

How could a man who had kissed my forehead three hours earlier have another pregnant woman calling him her husband?

Then the anesthesiologist leaned toward me.

“Claire, we found something strange in his jacket.”

He held up a small, bloodstained envelope.

My name was written across the front in Ethan’s unmistakable handwriting.

And beneath it were five words that made my stomach turn.

If I don't survive, trust nobody.
