Chapter 8 - The Night Bruno Chose a Door

The plan depended on greed.
Dante trusted greed.
Marco created a false private-banking portal showing a balance of $18,042,611.
Thomas leaked the access code to Victor.
A second code went to Evelyn Cross.
Both contained the same instruction:
PHYSICAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
LOCATION: VALE SHIPPING TERMINAL 4.
MIDNIGHT.
At 11:30 p.m., Victor arrived with six men.
At 11:47, two black federal SUVs entered from the east gate.
Evelyn Cross stepped out wearing a dark coat.
No badge.
No official team.
Only private security.
At midnight the warehouse lights came on.
Victor entered from one side.
Cross entered from the other.
“You,” Victor said.
“Victor,” Cross replied.
“You said the account was empty.”
“I said Michael invented it.”
“Then why are you here?”
Cross’s expression hardened.
“Why are you?”
A giant screen descended from the ceiling.
The fake balance appeared.
Dante’s voice came over the speakers.
“Eighteen million dollars makes old friends honest.”
Victor shouted, “Dante!”
Cross searched for cameras.
“One of you ordered the bridge,” Dante said.
Victor looked toward Cross.
“She did.”
Cross snapped, “You gave the order.”
“You told me Michael was expendable.”
“I wanted the ledger.”
Their argument became confession.
Every word was recorded and simultaneously copied to attorneys, journalists and investigators.
Then an alarm sounded.
Not part of the plan.
A vehicle had breached the west entrance.
Sofia’s SUV.
Bruno jumped out first.
Then Sofia.
And Ellie.
Dante grabbed the radio.
“Sofia, get out!”
“I tried! Bruno went insane after you left. Ellie ran after him. I followed both.”
Bruno was sniffing the pavement.
Then he turned toward Warehouse B.
Not the building where Victor and Cross stood.
A different door.
He barked.
Ellie pointed.
“He wants that one.”
Bruno hit the door with his body.
Once.
Twice.
The latch broke.
Inside was a small office.
A man stood over a computer, deleting files.
Owen Rusk.
Dante stopped.
“Owen?”
Owen reached for a gun.
Bruno growled.
Ellie whispered, “No.”
Owen froze.
He explained he was deleting files that revealed where Claire and Michael had lived.
“Why secretly?” Dante asked.
“Because I don’t trust your men.”
Marco looked offended.
“And because there’s still a leak.”
“We caught Thomas.”
“Thomas isn’t the leak.”
A gunshot exploded.
Owen fell.
Claire screamed.
Dante turned.
Marco stood in the doorway.
Gun raised.
For one impossible second, Dante could not process it.
Then Marco fired again.
Dante shoved Michael aside.
Bruno launched forward.
The gun flew.
Dante tackled Marco.
“Why?”
Marco stopped fighting.
His face changed.
“You were never supposed to find Michael.”
Dante stared.
“You?”
Marco smiled.
“Not Cross. Not Victor.”
Dante’s blood turned cold.
“The Broker.”
May you like
Marco’s smile widened.
“Now you understand.”
