Chapter 13 - The Fire and the Stone|

Gabriel didn't use a gun.
He tackled Dominic Marconi from behind with the fury of a wounded mountain lion, driving the older man violently across the room into the heavy oak wardrobe.
CRASH!
Wood splintered. Glass rained down.
The two men tumbled across the floor, exchanging heavy, brutal punches in the dim morning light. Marconi swung his pistol barrel, grazing Gabriel’s jaw, but Gabriel grabbed Marconi’s wrist, slamming it repeatedly against the stone hearth until the gun clattered away under the bed.
"You killed my wife, Dominic!" Gabriel roared, his iron hands locking around Marconi’s throat, pressing him down against the floorboards. "You sold my family to Moretti!"
"She... she was going to expose our dock routes!" Marconi choked out, his face turning purple as he clawed at Gabriel’s wrists. "She was a liability!"
"She was my life!" Gabriel growled.
Gabriel drove his fist downward, knocking Marconi unconscious onto the wooden floorboards.
Outside, the heavy sound of approaching sirens echoed through the pine forest—Daniel had managed to trip the manual silent alarm to the Door County Sheriff's Department.
Gabriel stood up, breathing heavily, his dark suit torn, blood dripping from a cut above his eyebrow. He turned his head slowly to look at me and his daughter.

Sophie was holding me, her hands trembling violently as she wiped the blood from my chin with her cardigan sleeve.
Gabriel walked over, dropping to his knees beside us on the floor. He gathered both of us into his broad, powerful arms, pulling us tightly against his chest as the sound of police sirens grew louder outside the gates.
