Chapter 4 - Box 317

The bank had changed names twice since Victor Shaw rented Box 317.

The box remained.

Paid ten years in advance.

Smart.

Inside were no jewels.

No cash.

No guns.

Only documents.

And one video drive.

Claire’s hands shook when she held it.

Dante wanted to take over.

He did not.

Her history.

Her choice.

They watched the video at Detective Brooks’s office.

Victor appeared on-screen.

Alive.

Nervous.

“If you’re watching this, I’m probably dead.”

Claire shut her eyes.

Victor continued.

“Adrian Valenti ordered Isabella’s vehicle forced off Route 23.”

Dante clenched his jaw.

“Vincent Valenti approved it.”

That hurt more.

His father again.

“Why?” Claire whispered.

Victor answered from the past.

“Because Isabella found the ledger.”

Dante looked at Claire.

“What ledger?”

She shook her head.

Victor explained.

Valenti Maritime had legitimate operations.

But Adrian and Vincent were using company routes for illegal pharmaceutical shipments.

Not street drugs.

Counterfeit oncology medication.

Fake cancer drugs.

Claire felt physically sick.

Patients had received useless compounds while criminals collected millions.

Isabella worked with the family foundation.

She discovered discrepancies in hospital donations.

Tracked batch numbers.

Found the scheme.

She threatened to expose it.

Vincent wanted silence.

Adrian wanted her dead.

Dante did not know.

Victor emphasized that.

“Dante Valenti was not informed.”

Claire looked at him.

Relief crossed Dante’s face.

Then shame.

He might not have ordered it.

His empire enabled it.

Victor continued.

“Isabella made a copy of the ledger and hid it somewhere Adrian couldn’t find.”

Where?

Victor did not know.

He ended with:

“If Eva grows up, tell her her mother fought for strangers she would never meet.”

Claire broke down.

Dante held her only after she reached for him first.

That mattered.

The investigation expanded.

Federal prosecutors joined.

Counterfeit medication cases reopened.

Families of patients learned why treatments failed.

The story became national news.

Isabella Valenti alive.

Mafia conspiracy.

Missing evidence.

Dante’s companies froze under scrutiny.

He cooperated.

His attorneys warned him.

“You’ll lose everything.”

“Maybe.”

“You could face charges unrelated to Isabella.”

“Yes.”

“Then why open the books?”

Dante looked toward Claire and Eva.

“Because closing them cost me three years.”

Claire heard.

She did not forgive him immediately.

But she noticed.

The old Dante protected the family name.

This Dante protected evidence.

Eva began therapy.

So did Claire.

Memory came in fragments.

Perfume.

Rain.

A kitchen argument.

Dante holding newborn Eva.

Adrian smiling at Christmas.

Then one night:

A ledger.

Blue leather.

Claire woke screaming.

Dante rushed in.

She pointed toward the nursery.

“Blue.”

“What?”

“The ledger was blue.”

Dante sat beside her.

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

She remembered hiding it.

Somewhere tied to Eva.

A lullaby.

Moon symbols.

A phrase:

Always find your way home.

The locket.

Claire grabbed Eva’s silver locket.

Inside was the phrase.

She examined the hinge.

Too thick.

Dante brought a small tool.

A false panel opened.

Inside:

A tiny memory card.

Claire laughed through tears.

“Of course.”

Isabella had hidden evidence in her daughter’s locket.

Nobody would steal a dead mother’s keepsake from a grieving child.

They copied the card before touching anything else.

Files showed account numbers.

Shipment manifests.

Emails.

Names.

Adrian.

Vincent.

Doctors.

Distributors.

Everything.

Then one folder shocked Dante.

DANTE.

Inside were recordings Isabella made secretly.

In one, she argued with him.

“You’re letting your father run things you don’t understand.”

Dante replied:

“I handle my side. He handles his.”

“That’s the problem.”

“You think every dirty deal is mine?”

“No. I think you’ve chosen not to look.”

Dante stopped the recording.

Claire watched him.

“You said that?”

“Yes.”

“Do you remember?”

“Yes.”

He looked destroyed.

Claire could have comforted him.

She did not.

Some pain belonged to accountability.

The final file contained Isabella speaking directly.

“If something happens to me, Dante will blame himself.”

Claire listened to her former self.

“He should blame himself for some things. Not this.”

Dante closed his eyes.

“He loved us. But love without courage becomes another cage.”

Claire froze.

She had said that.

Three years ago.

Still true.

Then Isabella continued.

“If I survive, I’m taking Eva and leaving until Dante chooses us over the empire.”

Dante lowered his head.

Claire whispered:

“I was leaving you.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

Silence.

Then the office phone rang.

Brooks answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Everyone waited.

She hung up.

“Adrian contacted federal agents.”

Dante stood.

“He’s surrendering?”

“No.”

May you like

Brooks looked at Claire.

“He says he’ll surrender only if Isabella comes alone.”
