Chapter 4 - The Child for the Card

For the next seventeen minutes, Gabriel Moretti became the man Atlantic City feared.

Not violent.

Worse.

Efficient.

Every gate closed.

Every vehicle locked remotely where possible.

Security divided the estate into zones.

Staff gathered in the ballroom.

Phones collected.

Police were called.

Federal contacts too.

Matteo stared.

“You’re calling police?”

“My son is missing.”

“Our family—”

Gabriel turned.

“Our family is why he’s missing.”

That ended the argument.

Claire stood near the nursery door holding Leo’s white sock.

One had fallen near the hallway.

Her hands shook.

Gabriel noticed.

“Go downstairs.”

“No.”

“This isn’t your fight.”

Claire stared.

“My sister vanished because of this family.”

“You can’t help here.”

She looked at the sock.

Then:

“The person who took him carried him.”

Gabriel frowned.

“What?”

“No stroller.”

“Yes.”

“No blanket either.”

“So?”

“Leo was wearing only his sleep clothes.”

Gabriel still didn’t understand.

Claire looked toward the corridor.

“He cries when strangers hold him.”

True.

“So?”

“We would hear him.”

Everyone went still.

Unless—

Gabriel felt cold.

“He knew them.”

Claire nodded.

Or he had been sedated.

That possibility terrified her.

“Check medical supplies.”

Dominic ran.

Rosa woke enough to speak.

She remembered opening the nursery door.

Someone she knew stood outside.

Who?

She struggled.

Then:

“Mrs. Vale.”

Gabriel frowned.

There was no Mrs. Vale.

“Who?”

Rosa’s eyes closed.

“Vera.”

Gabriel went still.

Vera Moretti.

Salvatore’s wife.

His aunt.

Sixty-one.

Soft-spoken.

Hosted Christmas.

Held Leo at Elena’s funeral.

Impossible.

Which no longer meant anything.

Vera had attended the gala.

Left early.

Security logs showed her vehicle departing at 11:03.

Then re-entering the estate through a service gate at 2:48.

No exit afterward.

They searched.

Wine cellar.

Kitchen.

Guest wing.

Pool house.

Nothing.

Claire returned to the nursery.

She looked at the mobile above the crib.

One star turned slowly.

Then she noticed the sound.

Very faint.

A baby.

Not upstairs.

Below.

“Gabriel.”

He turned.

She pressed one finger to her lips.

Everyone listened.

A cry.

Muffled.

Under them.

The old service corridors.

The estate had tunnels connecting storage rooms, kitchens, and the original carriage house.

Gabriel remembered playing there as a child.

Salvatore knew them.

So did Vera.

They entered from the linen room.

Gabriel wanted to go first.

Dominic refused.

Gabriel went anyway.

Downstairs, the crying became clearer.

Then a woman’s voice.

“Shh, sweetheart.”

Vera.

They found her in an old wine-storage chamber holding Leo.

A suitcase beside her.

Back door open toward the cliff road.

Gabriel raised both hands.

“Aunt Vera.”

She turned.

No gun.

No weapon.

Only the baby.

Leo saw Gabriel.

Cried harder.

Gabriel’s chest broke.

“Give him to me.”

Vera shook her head.

“You don’t understand.”

“I don’t care.”

“You should.”

“Give me my son.”

“Salvatore will kill him.”

Silence.

Matteo stared.

“What?”

Vera looked toward him.

“He killed Elena.”

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Claire felt tears immediately.

Vera continued.

“I found out after.”

“How?”

“His driver.”

“Who?”

“Elias.”

Gabriel’s jaw tightened.

Elias Vane.

“He confessed?”

“Not to you.”

“To me.”

Vera’s voice shook.

“He said Salvatore paid him to weaken the steering assembly.”

So the accident began before the car moved.

Elena’s last message.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

Truth landed.

Ugly.

Concrete.

“Why take Leo?”

“Because Salvatore knows you found Elena’s card.”

“How?”

Vera looked ashamed.

“I told him.”

Gabriel stared.

“I thought if I warned him, he would run.”

“You protected him.”

“For forty years.”

The words sounded like a sentence.

Vera cried.

“I thought I could stop him without destroying the family.”

Claire whispered:

“That’s what everyone keeps saying.”

Vera looked at her.

“Who are you?”

“Anna Bennett’s sister.”

Vera’s face changed.

“You’re Claire?”

Claire froze.

“You know me?”

“Anna talked about you.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Where is she?”

Vera looked toward Gabriel.

“Alive.”

Claire almost collapsed.

“Where?”

“Salvatore has her.”

Everyone went silent.

“Since when?”

“Six months.”

Claire gasped.

Vera continued.

“She had hospital records.”

“What records?”

“Elena’s bloodwork.”

Gabriel frowned.

“What matters about bloodwork?”

Vera looked at him.

“She had been drugged before the crash.”

Everything aligned.

Midazolam?

No.

Different case.

Here, likely sedative.

Vera whispered:

“A mild sedative. Enough to slow reaction.”

Gabriel felt sick.

Steering weakened.

Elena sedated.

Tracker.

Planned crash.

Not chance.

Murder.

“Where is Salvatore?”

Vera shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Anna?”

“Old Moretti marina.”

Claire moved immediately.

Gabriel stopped her.

“You’re not going alone.”

She laughed through tears.

“Were you planning to?”

He almost smiled.

Then Vera held Leo out.

Gabriel took his son.

Leo buried his face against his chest.

Gabriel closed his eyes.

For several seconds, Mafia Boss disappeared.

Only father remained.

When he opened his eyes, his voice was quiet.

“Dominic.”

“Yes.”

“Call Grant.”

Federal agent Ava Grant had spent years trying to dismantle Moretti operations.

Now Gabriel wanted her help.

Matteo looked stunned.

“You’re serious.”

“Yes.”

“Salvatore knows everything about us.”

“Then let someone outside us arrest him.”

May you like

That was the first real break with the old Moretti way.

And it would not be the last.
