Chapter 19 - THE LAST THING HER FATHER LEFT|

The pendant had been a birthday gift from me.

Jenna had worn it almost every day for two years. She had never known that a tiny compartment lay beneath the silver setting.

Marcus opened it with a precision tool in the secure room at Blackwood Tower.

Inside was a thin strip of paper folded into four sections.

Jenna unfolded it carefully.

The message contained a series of numbers, a date, and a sentence written in her father's handwriting.

The truth belongs to the people who survived it.

Beneath the words was a reference to a storage unit registered under Thomas Hart's name.

The unit had been rented eleven years earlier and paid for in advance.

We arrived at dawn.

The storage facility was nearly empty. Unit 114 stood at the far end of the building, its metal door marked by years of dust.

The key from the pendant fit the lock.

Inside were boxes of financial records, old photographs, and a laptop sealed in a protective case.

There was also a video message.

Jenna sat on a folding chair while I started the recording.

Thomas Hart appeared on the screen, looking tired but composed.

"If you're watching this, Jenna, then I wasn't able to explain everything to you myself."

He paused, choosing his words.

"I made mistakes. I believed that if I could keep the records safe, I could protect everyone. I was wrong to put that burden on you, even unknowingly."

Jenna covered her mouth.

Her father's voice continued.

"The ledger contains evidence against Victor Voss, Richard Blackwood, and Henry Cole. But it also contains proof that Daniel Blackwood was trying to dismantle the organization from within. He wasn't part of Voss's plan. He was trying to stop it."

I looked away.

For eleven years, I had wondered whether my father had secretly become the kind of man I spent my life fighting.

Now I finally had an answer.

Thomas continued.

"If you find this, please give the records to people who can investigate them independently. Do not trust anyone who tells you that power is more important than truth."

The screen went dark.

Jenna wept silently.

I sat beside her and took her hand.

"He wanted you to have a life beyond this."

"Then why did he hide everything in my childhood?"

"Because he loved you. He made a bad decision while trying to protect you."

She leaned against me.

"I wish he had trusted me."

"So do I."

We spent the next several hours copying the files and preparing them for independent investigators. Margaret provided a sworn statement. Marcus located the original financial records that matched the copies. The evidence was finally strong enough to expose the entire network.

But Voss wasn't finished.

At 9:15 a.m., every news outlet in Denver received an anonymous package.

It contained photographs of me meeting with criminal associates, copies of financial transfers, and an edited recording that made it appear I had ordered the murder of my own father.

The story spread within minutes.

My company was under investigation. Several business partners froze their accounts. Two of my lieutenants disappeared.

Then my phone rang.

A federal investigator introduced himself and asked me to come in for questioning.

I agreed.

Jenna watched me put on my coat.

"They're going to try to make you the villain."

"They've been trying for years."

"What if they succeed?"

I touched her cheek.

"Then tell the truth."

She looked at me.

"And what if the truth costs you everything?"

I smiled sadly.

"Then I'll finally know what was worth keeping."

I left with the investigators.

An hour later, Jenna received a message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Evan sitting inside an interrogation room.

Beneath it were eight words.

CONFESS, OR HE WILL NEVER WALK OUT ALIVE.
