Chapter 12 - The Spark in the Rain|

Walter Brandt’s eyes widened in pure terror as he realized Nico already had the evidence.

"Kill them!" Walter screamed, diving behind his SUV.

Gunfire erupted across the railyard like a thunderclap.

Nico dropped behind a steel rail car as a barrage of automatic rounds tore through the gravel where he had been standing. Beside him, Dante raised his shotgun and fired twice, blasting the windshield out of the lead Brandt vehicle.

"Boss!" Dante yelled over the deafening noise. "Paulie’s still in the middle!"

Nico looked out from behind the steel wheel frame.

Paulie Rizzo was struggling against his ropes, his chair lying sideways in the mud as bullets ricocheted off the gravel all around him.

Nico didn't hesitate. He pulled his 9mm from his belt, leaned out from behind the boxcar, and fired four quick shots, dropping two Brandt enforcers advancing down the center lane.

He sprinted through the mud, sliding on his knees until he reached Paulie’s side.

He pulled his pocketknife, sliced through the nylon ropes binding Paulie’s wrists, and dragged the older man behind the cover of a rusted steel dumpster.

"You're an idiot, Paulie," Nico growled, checking the older man's pulse.

"I know, boss," Paulie wheezed, clutching his bruised ribs. "I knew her husband... Thomas was a good kid. When Walter killed him, I couldn't just sit back and let him hurt Eleanor too..."

"Where is Walter?" Nico asked, peeking around the edge of the dumpster.

"He's heading for the train shed!" Paulie gasped. "He's got a boat waiting at the river slip behind the tracks!"

Nico reloaded his pistol with a sharp, metallic click.

"Dante! Cover the perimeter!" Nico yelled. "Nobody leaves this yard!"
