Chapter 16 - THE EMPTY ROOM|

Norah left the Costa estate on a rainy Thursday morning.

She carried one suitcase, her father's letters, and the small wooden box containing the blue ledger's personal papers. Roman had arranged a car to take her to her aunt's home, but he did not accompany her.

He stood at the front entrance as she walked down the steps.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Norah turned.

“Take care of yourself, Roman.”

He nodded.

“You, too.”

She entered the car.

Roman watched until it disappeared beyond the gates.

The mansion seemed larger after she left.

The kitchen was quiet. The study smelled of coffee and old leather. The rooms she had cleaned for two years remained spotless, yet every surface seemed to remind him of something he had failed to notice.

He had once believed that being feared was enough.

Now he understood that fear could make people obey him while hiding the truth from him.

He had confused obedience with loyalty, silence with agreement, and control with safety.

Norah had shown him the difference.

For several weeks, Roman focused on dismantling the corrupt financial structures within his organization. He cooperated with investigators, removed people implicated in the cover-up, and transferred legitimate businesses to independent management.

Some of his associates left.

Others threatened him.

A few called him a traitor.

Roman accepted the consequences.

He also began attending meetings with a counselor recommended by his attorney. At first, he considered the sessions pointless. He was accustomed to solving problems through action, not conversation.

But he continued.

He learned to recognize the ways he used anger to avoid fear. He learned that apologies were meaningless without changed behavior. He learned that protecting someone did not give him ownership over their choices.

Most importantly, he learned that Norah did not owe him a reward for changing.

He sent no flowers.

No expensive gifts.

No messages demanding an answer.

Once, he wrote her a letter.

He apologized without asking for forgiveness and told her what he had done to address the corruption. Then he placed the letter in a drawer.

If she never wanted to see him again, he would respect that.

Across the city, Norah began rebuilding her life.

She moved into a small apartment with sunlight in the kitchen and a view of a neighborhood park. She found work at a restoration workshop that specialized in preserving old furniture and family heirlooms.

The work suited her.

She enjoyed taking something damaged and discovering what could be saved without pretending the damage had never happened.

Her supervisor, a patient woman named Mrs. Alvarez, taught her how to repair antique wood, identify old varnishes, and document the history of each piece.

For the first time in years, Norah earned money that belonged entirely to her.

She bought new shoes.

She visited her father's grave.

She went for walks without checking over her shoulder.

Some nights, she still woke from dreams in which Victor stood in a dark room and told her she had no choice.

But she no longer believed him.

Three months after leaving the estate, Norah received a package.

It contained a small velvet box.

Inside was her father's old watch.

She had believed it lost after his death.

A note accompanied it.

The investigators recovered this from a storage unit connected to Victor's associates. It belonged to your father, and it belongs with you.

There was no signature.

Norah recognized Roman's handwriting.

She held the watch in her palm for a long time.

Then she put it away.

Not because she felt nothing.

Because she wanted to be certain that whatever she felt was truly hers.

That evening, she received another message.

It came from a number she did not recognize.

Your father kept more than one copy of the records. The last copy is still missing. And someone has started looking for it.

Norah stared at the screen.

May you like

She had believed the worst was behind her.

Now she understood that the truth was not finished with her family.
