Chapter 5 - Elias Comes Home

Elias Duca returned to Manhattan on a private jet registered to a company that officially sold agricultural equipment.

No police met him.

No sons waited.

Alessandro wanted evidence before confrontation.

Federal investigator Mara Chen had been quietly reviewing ORPHEUS.

She advised patience.

Alessandro hated patience.

Lucia loved that he hated it.

“Good,” she said.

“What?”

“Now you know how everyone else feels around you.”

Matteo stayed at a secure house.

He met Emma twenty-four hours after Lucia found him.

No cameras.

No Alessandro.

Lucia wanted the moment private.

She later told Alessandro only one thing.

“Emma cried when he held her.”

“Bad?”

“No. Matteo cried harder.”

That was enough.

Reunion did not erase abandonment.

Lucia made that clear.

Matteo would have to earn a place in their daughter’s life.

Alessandro supported her.

His old self might have ordered everyone to reunite because family demanded it.

Now he understood family could not command trust.

Elias entered Duca Tower at noon.

He used an old biometric profile nobody knew remained active.

That alone proved internal help.

He walked into Alessandro’s executive office as if returning from lunch.

Older.

Silver in his hair.

Same dark eyes.

Alessandro remained seated.

Elias smiled.

“My son.”

Alessandro did not stand.

“My dead father.”

Elias laughed.

“Always dramatic.”

“You staged your death.”

“For strategic necessity.”

“You murdered Matteo.”

“I did no such thing.”

“You ordered the warehouse hit.”

“Victor exceeded instructions.”

Convenient.

Alessandro recorded everything through federal authorization.

Elias did not know.

“You know about Emma,” Alessandro said.

Elias smiled.

“My granddaughter.”

“She is not yours.”

“Blood disagrees.”

“Blood is not permission.”

Elias’s smile faded.

That language was unfamiliar in the Duca family.

He sat.

“I came because the company is vulnerable.”

“No.”

“You have federal investigators in our accounts.”

“My accounts.”

“Our name.”

“There it is.”

Elias leaned forward.

“You think you can cleanse a family business by changing paperwork? Men obey us because they remember what happens when they don’t.”

Alessandro looked at the man who raised him.

For years, he feared becoming Elias.

Now he saw something smaller.

An old man addicted to relevance.

“Matteo is alive.”

Elias’s face changed.

Tiny.

But enough.

“You knew.”

Elias recovered.

“I suspected.”

“You tried to kill him.”

“No.”

Alessandro let silence work.

Elias eventually said:

“Matteo became reckless.”

Another near-confession.

“What about Emma?”

“She complicates inheritance.”

There.

Alessandro’s body went cold.

“How?”

Elias explained without realizing he was condemning himself.

Their grandfather’s trust divided controlling voting rights among living male descendants and their recognized children.

Matteo legally acknowledging Emma would shift a block of shares away from Alessandro’s branch and prevent Elias from using an old proxy provision.

Emma was leverage.

Not granddaughter.

A vote.

Alessandro felt disgust.

“You came for paperwork.”

“I came for family continuity.”

“No.”

Elias smiled.

“You always were sentimental about Matteo.”

“And you always confused control with family.”

Elias stood.

“You will understand when you have children.”

Alessandro looked toward the hidden camera.

“I already understand from watching you.”

Federal agents entered.

Elias did not panic.

He laughed.

“You brought police into my building?”

“Yes.”

“You think that makes you clean?”

“No.”

Good answer.

“I think cooperating with consequences makes me accountable.”

Elias was arrested.

Victor followed that evening.

Marco testified about the authorization certificate.

Silas Kane from internal operations cooperated.

Dozens of shell accounts opened.

The old network collapsed faster than Alessandro expected because most men were loyal to money, not mythology.

Matteo gave evidence remotely.

Lucia refused all press contact.

Emma remained invisible publicly.

Alessandro used his influence for privacy, not publicity.

Months passed.

Elias faced conspiracy, attempted murder, fraud, money laundering, racketeering, and obstruction.

Victor faced similar charges.

Both were convicted on major counts.

No grand final confession.

No cinematic execution.

Prison.

Paperwork.

Judges.

Consequences.

That suited Alessandro more than revenge would have.

Matteo moved into an apartment near Lucia.

Not with her.

He asked.

She said no.

He accepted.

He visited Emma under Lucia’s schedule.

Changed diapers.

Learned bottles.

Took a parenting class.

Alessandro mocked him.

Matteo replied:

“You held her like a briefcase the first day.”

Fair.

The brothers began repairing too.

Slowly.

One evening Matteo asked:

“Do you hate me?”

Alessandro thought.

“Yes.”

Matteo nodded.

“Also love you.”

Matteo smiled sadly.

“Both?”

“Unfortunately.”

Good enough.

Then Lucia made a decision.

She returned to nursing school.

Alessandro offered tuition.

She refused.

Matteo offered.

She refused harder.

Instead she applied for scholarships.

Won one.

Alessandro suspected the committee had no idea who she was.

Good.

Her life became hers again.

Emma turned one.

Small birthday.

No reporters.

No ballroom.

Cake on her face.

Matteo cried.

Isabella cried.

Alessandro pretended dust entered his eye.

Lucia noticed.

Said nothing.

At the end of the night, Emma waddled across the living room.

Past Matteo.

Past Isabella.

Straight to Alessandro.

She grabbed his trouser leg.

Exactly as she had months earlier.

Everyone laughed.

Alessandro looked down.

“Again?”

Emma raised both arms.

He picked her up correctly this time.

Lucia smiled.

“You learned.”

“Do not spread that information.”

She laughed.

And something between them shifted.

Not romance.

May you like

Not yet.

But warmth.
