Chapter 19 - The Family Meeting|

Adrian arrived at the Moretti corporate office with two attorneys and the confidence of a man who believed he could still negotiate his way out of anything.

He denied forging my signature. He denied directing Thomas to follow me. He denied knowing about the threat. He claimed the missing scholarship funds had been transferred for legitimate investments and that the paperwork had been mishandled by employees.

But the documents were no longer scattered fragments.

They formed a pattern.

The bank records matched the transfer orders. The original letters established that the scholarship recipients had never received their promised funds. The recording placed Adrian and Thomas in a discussion about the irregularities. Sophia's evidence showed that Adrian had attempted to manipulate the divorce and frame me as an opportunist.

The investigators were not relying on a single accusation. They were following the evidence from one transaction to the next.

Vincent called a meeting with the remaining foundation trustees. I agreed to attend with Evelyn because my name was still on the disputed documents, and I wanted the record to reflect my position directly.

The conference room was crowded when we arrived. Several trustees looked uncomfortable. Others avoided my eyes.

Adrian sat at the far end of the table.

“Claire,” he said smoothly. “I didn't expect you to come.”

“I didn't expect to find my name on documents I never signed.”

He smiled without warmth.

“You should be careful. Accusing family members is a serious matter.”

“Then you should be careful about using a family member's name without permission.”

His smile disappeared.

Vincent took his seat but did not speak for me. Evelyn placed copies of the verified documents before the trustees, explaining which claims had been authenticated and which remained under investigation.

Adrian interrupted repeatedly.

“This is a personal dispute. Claire is divorcing Vincent, and she's using a financial inquiry to punish the family.”

I looked directly at him.

“You told the public I was trying to destroy the Moretti family because my husband rejected me. You sent someone to follow me. You used my name on financial documents. You threatened my unborn child. If you want to call that personal, explain why the evidence has dates, signatures, and bank records.”

The room fell silent.

Adrian turned to Vincent.

“Are you going to let her speak to me like that?”

Vincent's answer was quiet.

“She has every right to speak.”

“You're choosing your wife over your family?”

“No,” Vincent said. “I'm choosing the truth over a convenient lie.”

Adrian laughed, but the sound was strained.

“You think you're different from me? You built this organization. You benefited from every dollar it made. You don't get to pretend you're innocent because you suddenly feel guilty.”

Vincent did not deny the accusation.

“I benefited from a system I failed to examine. That failure is mine. But I did not authorize you to steal from a charity or use my wife's name to conceal it.”

“You signed the review order!”

“I did. And I should have demanded the audit. The investigators will have my records, and if I broke the law, I'll answer for it.”

Adrian stared at him.

For the first time, he seemed to realize that Vincent was not going to rescue him from the consequences.

The meeting ended when the investigators arrived with additional questions and formal notices. Adrian's attorneys advised him to cooperate. He left without looking at me.

Later that afternoon, Thomas Vale was located and taken into custody for questioning. The evidence against both men would be assessed through the legal process, but the intimidation and financial misconduct could no longer be dismissed as rumors.

I stood outside the office as the sky darkened over Chicago.

Vincent joined me, keeping his distance.

“It's not over yet,” he said.

“No. But the truth is finally in the room.”

He nodded.

“I wish I'd listened to you sooner.”

“So do I.”

He looked at me, and for a moment I saw the man I had married beneath the man he had become.

“I love you, Claire.”

I felt the words land, but they no longer controlled me.

“I loved you too,” I said. “I still care about the person you could be. But love can't erase what happened.”

“I know.”

“I won't come back to the marriage because you're afraid of losing it.”

“I won't ask you to.”

We stood in silence.

Then I felt a small flutter low in my abdomen. It was faint, almost like a bubble moving beneath my skin.

I pressed my hand there.

Vincent noticed.

“Was that—?”

“I don't know. Maybe.”

He looked at my hand but didn't reach for it.

“Can I ask you something?”

“You can.”

“If you ever feel comfortable sharing these moments with me, I would be grateful. But I won't demand them.”

I studied him.

“That's the first thing you've asked me for in a long time that doesn't sound like an order.”

He gave a sad, brief smile.

“I'm trying to learn.”

I went home alone that evening.

For once, the distance between us felt less like a battlefield and more like a boundary that could keep us both honest.

The following morning, Evelyn called with an update. Adrian had agreed to cooperate with investigators in exchange for consideration in the legal proceedings. He had provided records identifying additional accounts and confirming that Thomas had helped conceal the transfers.

The evidence had finally begun to tell the whole story.

And for the first time since my birthday, I could look toward the future without wondering whether someone was waiting to pull me backward.
