Chapter 4 - The Name Cut From My Mother’s Letter

The missing name became the most dangerous secret in Boston.
Salvatore disappeared.
Helen Bell disappeared.
Dominic claimed ignorance.
Michael Vane stopped answering calls.
For the first time in my adult life, I invited the FBI into my study.
Special Agent Rebecca Lane arrived with a face that said she disliked criminals almost as much as I disliked federal agents.
Perfect.
She examined my mother’s evidence.
Judges.
Port officials.
Construction inspectors.
Police contacts.
Old money moving through new companies.
The cassette contained Lucia’s voice.
I had forgotten how she sounded.
“Roman is asleep,” she said.
Another man answered.
“You have to leave.”
“I won’t leave my son.”
“He’s why you need to.”
Then Lucia said, “Salvatore knows.”
The man replied, “No. Salvatore suspects. The other one knows.”
Elena recognized the voice.
Michael Vane.
My father’s attorney.
Agents searched his office.
He was gone.
But one file remained.
GRACE HARPER.
Inside were Grace’s employment records, medical records, Mia’s school schedule, Sophie’s birth certificate, and an old photograph.
Grace at ten years old beside her father.
Elena recognized him.
Daniel Harper.
A state police detective who had secretly worked with Lucia.
Grace never knew.
Her father had supposedly died in a construction accident when she was thirteen.
Another lie.
A note in the file read:
DAUGHTER UNAWARE. KEEP CLOSE.
Michael Vane had helped place Grace inside my household eight years earlier.
Maybe to watch her.
Maybe to protect her.
Maybe both.
Then Mia entered carrying a drawing.
The mansion.
Grace.
Sophie.
Me.
Elena behind the wall.
And a faceless man in the hallway.
“Who is this?” I asked.
“The old man who gave Mrs. Bell the envelope.”
“What did he say?”
Mia thought.
“He said, ‘The little one hears too much.’”
The room went silent.
That night, Michael called me from an unknown number.
He was alive.
Barely.
“Your mother was wrong,” he said.
“About what?”
“Salvatore didn’t kill her.”
“Luca confessed he saw poison delivered.”
“Delivered. Not ordered.”
“Then who ordered it?”
Michael whispered, “Your father.”
The line died.
Minutes later, the lights went out.
Backup power came on.

The secret bookcase stood open.
Elena was gone.
