Chapter 6 - What Ronan Hid in the Nursery

The black case contained cameras.

Not ordinary baby monitors.

Micro-cameras.

Two were found inside Sofia’s bedroom.

One inside a stuffed animal.

Another in a smoke detector.

A third beneath the desk in Dominic’s study.

Ronan had been watching the family from inside the house.

Dominic wanted to tear the walls apart.

Mara made him wait for forensic teams.

They found transmitters, routing devices, and months of stored footage.

Sofia sleeping.

Clara reading bedtime stories.

Dominic arguing with lawyers.

Eleanor pacing alone.

Private grief converted into intelligence.

Dominic felt violated.

Then ashamed.

He had spent years believing surveillance protected him.

Now another man had done the same thing to his family.

Clara saw him staring at one of the hidden cameras.

“Different when you’re not the one controlling it.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

No defense.

The footage gave investigators something priceless.

Ronan’s voice.

On one recording, Eleanor spoke to him in the hallway.

“You promised me you had proof about Elena.”

“I do.”

“Then give it to me.”

“When Sofia is ready.”

“Ready for what?”

“To demonstrate instability.”

Eleanor sounded uncomfortable.

“She’s four.”

“Courts like patterns.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

Ronan intended to create a pattern of fear responses.

Snake.

Maybe other staged incidents.

Then record Sofia panicking.

Use edited clips.

Build medical claims.

Control the trust.

The plan was monstrous because it was bureaucratic.

No dramatic kidnapping needed.

Just paperwork.

Professional opinions.

Edited context.

A child turned into evidence against herself.

Mara said, “This helps conspiracy charges.”

“Find him.”

“We are.”

They did not know Ronan was closer than anyone expected.

He called Clara.

Directly.

Unknown number.

She answered while standing in the kitchen.

“Clara Bennett?”

“Yes.”

“You’re making this harder.”

Her body went cold.

“Who is this?”

“You know.”

Ronan.

She put the call on speaker.

Marco silently alerted Mara.

Clara kept her voice steady.

“Why call me?”

“Because Dominic listens to you.”

Dominic entered.

Clara raised one finger.

Wait.

“What do you want?”

“Take Sofia out of the house.”

“Why?”

“Dominic is dangerous.”

Clara nearly laughed.

“You planted cameras in a four-year-old’s bedroom.”

“I documented abuse.”

“You created it.”

“The snake was Eleanor.”

“You encouraged it.”

Silence.

That confirmed enough.

Ronan continued.

“Dominic will ruin Sofia.”

“Then why did Elena trust him?”

Another silence.

“Did she?”

Clara looked at Dominic.

Pain crossed his face.

She continued.

“She stayed. She built a family with him. She wrote that legacy was the danger, not him.”

Ronan’s voice hardened.

“You have the ledger.”

Police had not made that public.

Clara caught it.

“How do you know?”

He hung up.

Mara traced the call to a cell tower near the estate.

Ronan was within five miles.

Roadblocks went up.

Dominic moved Sofia to a secure location.

This time he asked her.

“We’re going somewhere different tonight.”

“Hotel?”

“Not exactly.”

“Can Clara come?”

“Yes, if she wants.”

Clara agreed.

A protected residence owned by the county felt ordinary compared with the mansion.

Sofia loved it.

Cheap carpet.

Tiny kitchen.

A television with cartoon stickers on the remote.

“No snakes?” she asked.

Clara smiled.

“No snakes.”

Dominic sat at the small table.

He looked absurd in a room designed for normal people.

Sofia climbed into his lap for the first time since the incident.

He froze.

Then slowly put one arm around her.

Clara looked away to give them privacy.

That night, Ronan broke into the mansion.

He thought Sofia was still there.

Security caught movement near the nursery.

Mara’s team responded.

Ronan escaped through the desert wash behind the property.

But he left blood on a broken window.

And one item.

A folder placed on Sofia’s bed.

Inside were copies of Elena’s photographs.

The crash scene.

The café meeting.

The ledger.

And a letter addressed to Dominic.

YOU WANT THE TRUTH?

COME ALONE.

Coordinates.

Desert property east of Joshua Tree.

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Of course.”

Mara took the letter.

“You’re not going alone.”

“He won’t talk otherwise.”

“He murdered Elena.”

“Allegedly.”

Mara raised an eyebrow.

“Look at you.”

“I’ve been trained.”

Clara almost smiled.

Dominic wanted answers.

But he no longer trusted answers obtained through reckless action.

They planned an operation.

Dominic would appear alone.

Police would remain outside detection range.

Hidden microphone.

Tracker.

No weapon.

He hated the no-weapon part.

Clara said, “Good.”

He glared.

She shrugged.

“You asked for accountability.”

“I didn’t ask for enthusiasm.”

Before he left, Sofia hugged him.

“Come back.”

He closed his eyes.

“I will.”

“You promise?”

He hesitated.

Promises were dangerous.

Then:

“I promise I will do everything I can to come back.”

Sofia accepted that.

Honest.

No false certainty.

At sunset, Dominic drove into the desert.

The coordinates led to an abandoned ranch.

One building.

One truck.

Ronan waited inside.

Older than Dominic remembered.

Gray hair.

Sunken face.

A pistol on the table.

Not in his hand.

“You came.”

Dominic stood in the doorway.

“You killed my wife.”

Ronan smiled.

“You finally learned to ask the right question.”

“That was not a question.”

Ronan pointed to a chair.

Dominic remained standing.

Ronan laughed.

“Still your father’s son.”

“No.”

That answer came easily now.

Ronan’s expression changed.

“Sit.”

“No.”

“What do you want?”

“The truth.”

Ronan leaned back.

“Elena was going to destroy everything.”

“Theft.”

“The Moretti system.”

“My father’s crimes.”

“Your inheritance.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“My wife.”

Ronan’s smile disappeared.

“She gave me no choice.”

“There is always a choice.”

“You sound like her.”

Good.

Ronan continued.

“She had the ledger. She was going to federal prosecutors.”

“So you cut her brakes.”

“Yes.”

The confession arrived without remorse.

Dominic’s hands curled.

Mara listened through the hidden microphone.

Ronan continued.

“Your mother could have stopped her.”

“Do not blame Eleanor for your murder.”

“She chose silence.”

“So did you.”

“I chose survival.”

“No.”

Dominic looked at him.

“You chose money.”

Ronan reached for the pistol.

Dominic did not move.

Police flooded the building.

Ronan froze.

Mara shouted.

“Hands!”

For one second, Ronan looked at Dominic.

“You brought police.”

“Yes.”

“You really have changed.”

Dominic’s voice was quiet.

“That was Elena’s last gift.”

Ronan lowered his hands.

The gun stayed on the table.

He was arrested without a shot.

Dominic walked outside.

Clara waited near the command vehicle.

He had not known she was coming.

“You okay?”

He looked at the desert sky.

“No.”

She nodded.

May you like

Then he said:

“But I will be.”
