Chapter 5 - A Husband at the Door

|

Two days after I left the hospital, Ethan found me.

I never learned exactly how. My attorney suspected someone had recognized Lily near the hotel or traced a payment connected to my temporary arrangements. Ethan had resources most people could not imagine, and I had underestimated how quickly he could use them.

It was almost seven in the evening when the front desk called my room.

“Mrs. Blackwood, there is a Mr. Blackwood downstairs. He says he's your husband.”

I felt Lily's hand tighten around mine.

“Mommy, is Daddy here?”

I looked toward the door.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“Can I see him?”

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to shield her from the fear that had become my constant companion. But Lily had not heard the conversation in the hospital. She had not spent three nights wondering whether the person she loved most was waiting for her to die.

She only knew her father had been absent.

“Let me speak to him first,” I said.

I called Daniel.

“Don't meet him alone,” he instructed. “Ask hotel security to remain present. I'll contact his attorney. If you feel unsafe, you can refuse the meeting.”

I went downstairs with Lily beside me and two security employees nearby.

Ethan stood in the lobby wearing a black coat over a white shirt. His hair was disheveled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He looked as though he had not slept.

The moment Lily saw him, she ran forward.

“Daddy!”

He dropped to one knee and caught her in his arms.

For a few seconds, his face changed completely. He pressed his cheek against her hair and closed his eyes.

“There's my girl.”

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too, sweetheart.”

“Why didn't you come home?”

His arms tightened around her.

“I made a mistake.”

“Did you make Mommy sad?”

Ethan looked over Lily's shoulder at me.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “I did.”

It was the first honest answer I had heard from him in months.

Lily hugged him again before I gently led her toward the seating area with a hotel employee.

Ethan rose.

“Claire, please.”

“You can speak to my attorney.”

“I didn't come here to fight.”

“Then why did you come?”

“To bring you home.”

I almost smiled.

“You still think this is about a house.”

“It's our home.”

“It stopped feeling like one long before the accident.”

His expression tightened.

“I know what you heard.”

“Then you know why I'm not going back.”

He looked down at his hands.

“I was frightened.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing you.”

I stared at him.

“You asked a doctor when he could remove my oxygen.”

“I was asking about your recovery.”

“You asked what would happen if I never woke up.”

“I needed to understand the possibilities.”

“You sounded angry that treatment might continue.”

His face went pale.

“I was angry at myself. At the accident. At everything I couldn't control.”

“You could have held my hand. You could have told me you were scared. Instead, you stood beside my bed and talked as though I were a problem someone needed to solve.”

He opened his mouth, then closed it.

For the first time, I saw the possibility that he had no defense that would make the words sound better.

“I never wanted you dead,” he whispered.

I believed that he wanted me to believe him.

I wasn't ready to decide whether I did.

“Did you sleep with Vanessa?”

He looked away.

“Claire—”

“It's a yes-or-no question.”

“Not the way you're imagining.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

He rubbed a hand over his face.

“We crossed boundaries.”

My chest tightened.

“What boundaries?”

“I let her become too involved in my personal life. I let her think she had a place beside me that she didn't have.”

“Did you sleep with her?”

He did not answer.

That was answer enough.

I felt the last thread of hope snap.

“Please leave, Ethan.”

“I love you.”

“Love doesn't make me feel safe anymore.”

His eyes filled with something I had never seen there before: helplessness.

“I can fix this.”

“No. You can decide whether you want to become someone who would never do it again. That's different.”

He took one step toward me, then stopped when the security guard shifted position.

“Can I see Lily?”

“Through the arrangements our attorneys establish. She deserves her father, but she also deserves peace.”

He nodded once.

Before he left, he turned back.

“Vanessa is lying about something. I don't know what yet, but I will find out.”

I held his gaze.

“Find out for yourself. I won't be waiting beside you while you do.”

After he walked away, Lily came running back to me.

“Daddy looked sad.”

I wrapped my arms around her.

“He has some things to think about.”

“Will he come to my recital?”

I closed my eyes.

“I hope he does, sweetheart.”

But that night, a message arrived from Daniel.

Vanessa's attorney has contacted us. She claims Ethan promised to leave you before the accident—and says she has evidence.

Attached was a photograph of a document bearing my husband's signature.
