Chapter 5 - The Night the Mansion Became a Fortress

Adrien did not sleep.

By midnight, guards surrounded the estate.

By one, cameras covered every entrance.

By two, Marco had identified three vehicles linked to Victor Sanz.

By three, Adrien had made a decision.

Elena needed to leave Chicago.

When he told her the next morning, she refused.

"No."

Adrien blinked.

People rarely told him no.

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

"You and Mia are targets."

"Because of you."

The words hung between them.

Adrien didn't deny it.

Elena immediately regretted the cruelty in her tone.

"I didn't mean—"

"You did."

He looked away.

"And you're right."

Mia sat at the breakfast table eating pancakes shaped like bears.

She glanced between them.

"Are you fighting?"

"No," Elena said.

"Yes," Adrien said simultaneously.

Mia sighed.

"Adults."

Adrien almost smiled.

Elena didn't.

"I will not let you put my daughter on a plane without me knowing where we're going."

"You'd be together."

"Where?"

"A house in Vermont."

"For how long?"

"Until Victor is handled."

Elena crossed her arms.

"What does handled mean?"

Adrien said nothing.

"Exactly."

He stood.

"This isn't negotiable."

Elena stood too.

"I am not your employee anymore."

"Good."

"And I'm not one of your men."

"I know."

"So you don't give me orders."

Adrien stared.

Mia lifted her fork.

"She's right."

Adrien looked at her.

"Traitor."

Mia smiled.

Elena fought back one herself.

Then a sound shattered the moment.

Glass exploding.

Adrien moved before anyone else understood.

He grabbed Mia and pulled Elena to the floor.

A bullet struck the wall.

Guards shouted.

Another shot.

Adrien shielded Mia with his body.

Elena crawled toward them.

"Stay down!"

"I'm not leaving her!"

"You'll both get killed."

The shooting stopped almost immediately.

Marco's men returned fire toward the tree line.

Adrien looked down.

Mia was silent.

Too silent.

Her face was pressed against his chest.

He lifted her gently.

"Mia?"

She trembled.

"It's okay."

Her fingers gripped his shirt.

"Bad man?"

Adrien swallowed.

"Yes."

"Did he come because I polished your shoes?"

The question nearly destroyed him.

"No."

"But the other bad man knew."

"No, Mia."

Adrien cupped the back of her head.

"This is not because of you."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Elena stared at him.

For the first time, she saw fear in Adrien Romano's eyes.

Not fear of bullets.

Fear for them.

Security confirmed the shooter had escaped.

But the message was clear.

Victor had wanted Adrien frightened.

He succeeded.

Within an hour, Elena agreed to relocate.

Not Vermont.

Adrien compromised.

A secure lake house ninety minutes from Chicago.

He would go with them.

"You can't," Marco said.

Adrien stared.

"They're targeting you."

"Exactly."

"So being with them increases danger."

Adrien knew.

He hated knowing.

Elena heard the argument.

That evening she found him alone in the library.

"You can't come."

Adrien looked up.

"Changed your mind about orders?"

"I'm serious."

"So am I."

She stepped closer.

"Your presence puts Mia in danger."

The words cut deeper than she intended.

Adrien looked toward the fire.

"I know."

Elena's anger faded.

He looked suddenly tired.

Not physically.

Older.

For the first time she understood what power cost him.

Every person he cared about became leverage.

Maybe that was why he had stopped caring.

"You've spent seven years alone, haven't you?"

Adrien's eyes lifted.

"Who told you?"

"Nobody."

She sat across from him.

"It's obvious."

He almost laughed.

"Is it?"

"You have fifty rooms and use three."

Adrien looked around.

"You investigated me."

"I clean houses. You learn things."

He smiled faintly.

Then the smile vanished.

"The last woman I trusted sold information that nearly killed me."

Elena said nothing.

"My father died because of it."

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be."

"Why?"

"Because sympathy doesn't change history."

"No."

Elena leaned forward.

"But history doesn't have to decide everything that happens next."

Adrien looked at her.

Something unfamiliar passed between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something more dangerous.

Trust.

His phone rang.

Marco.

Adrien answered.

"We found Caldwell."

"Alive?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Victor's warehouse."

Adrien stood.

Elena's expression changed.

"You're going."

"Yes."

"You said violence—"

"I didn't promise there'd be none."

"Adrien."

He turned.

She stared at him.

"Come back."

Two words.

Nothing else.

Adrien Romano had been ordered to survive by generals, doctors, bodyguards, and family members.

None had sounded like that.

He nodded once.

"I will."

The operation lasted forty-one minutes.

Marco's men surrounded the warehouse.

Police weren't called.

Not yet.

Adrien entered through the loading dock.

Caldwell was tied to a chair.

Victor stood behind him.

"Romano."

Adrien stopped.

"Victor."

Victor smiled.

"Domestic life suits you."

Adrien's jaw tightened.

"Child's cute."

That almost broke his control.

Almost.

Victor noticed.

"There it is."

"What?"

"A heart."

Adrien stared at him.

"You spent years trying to kill me."

Victor shrugged.

"Hard to kill a man who doesn't care whether he lives."

He smiled.

"But now?"

Adrien's hand tightened.

"Now I just have to threaten the right people."

Caldwell began crying.

"I'm sorry."

Adrien barely looked at him.

Victor lifted his gun.

Shots erupted.

Adrien dove behind a crate.

Marco's men returned fire.

The warehouse filled with noise.

Victor ran.

Adrien pursued him through the rear exit.

They collided beside the river.

Victor swung first.

Adrien hit harder.

Years of anger poured into every movement.

Victor fell.

Adrien stood over him.

A gun lay within reach.

Victor smiled through blood.

"Do it."

Adrien picked up the weapon.

For seven years, this was what he had wanted.

The man responsible for his father's death.

The man threatening Mia.

The man threatening Elena.

Victor waited.

Adrien slowly lowered the gun.

"No."

Victor laughed.

"Getting soft?"

Adrien looked at him.

"No."

Sirens approached.

Marco had called law enforcement after securing Caldwell's records.

"I'm getting smarter."

Victor's smile disappeared.

Adrien stepped back.

"You wanted me to become exactly what everyone says I am."

Police lights reflected across the river.

"Not tonight."

Victor was arrested with enough evidence to spend decades in prison.

Caldwell agreed to testify.

For the first time in years, Adrien walked away from revenge without blood on his hands.

At 4:12 a.m., he returned to the lake house.

Elena was waiting.

She stood when he entered.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then she crossed the room.

And hugged him.

Adrien froze.

His arms remained at his sides.

Then slowly, uncertainly, he held her.

Mia appeared at the top of the stairs carrying Teddy.

"You came back!"

Adrien looked up.

She ran down the steps.

He crouched just in time to catch her.

Mia wrapped both arms around his neck.

Adrien closed his eyes.

Something inside him finally broke.

Not painfully.

May you like

Like ice melting after a winter that had lasted too long.
