Chapter 2 - THE BOSS WHO ASKED ONE QUESTION|

Nobody moved after Adrian gave the order.

The estate's security chief, Victor Shaw, appeared in the doorway within seconds.

"Sir?"

"Lock the gates. Nobody leaves until I know what happened here."

Vanessa hurried toward Adrian, her expression changing from triumph to wounded innocence.

"Darling, you're home early."

He didn't look at her.

"Nora."

I stood beside the kitchen table.

"Yes, Mr. Cole?"

"Come here."

I approached him, keeping my hands folded in front of me.

His gaze moved over my uneven hair, the small red mark on my wrist, and the white cloth protruding from my uniform pocket.

"Did she do this?"

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Adrian, it was a joke. Everyone is making this much more dramatic than it was."

He finally turned toward her.

"You think cutting off someone's hair in front of seventy employees is a joke?"

"I was correcting an attitude."

"What attitude?"

"She acts as though she's special. You remember her name, you thank her for everything, and you allow her to speak to you as though she's—"

"As though she's a human being?"

Vanessa's mouth closed.

Adrian turned back to me.

"Did anyone try to stop her?"

I looked toward Helen.

The older woman lowered her eyes.

I could have destroyed the room with one sentence. Instead, I answered carefully.

"Helen asked her to stop."

"And the others?"

"They watched."

His jaw tightened.

Vanessa stepped between us.

"This is ridiculous. You're allowing a maid to turn you against your own fiancée."

Adrian looked at her for several seconds.

Then he said something nobody expected.

"Leave the room."

Vanessa stared at him.

"What?"

"Now."

She stormed out, her heels striking the marble.

Adrian remained silent until the doors closed.

Then he looked at Victor.

"Bring me the security footage from last night."

Victor nodded.

"And find out who authorized Miss Whitmore to summon the entire staff."

"I will, sir."

Adrian dismissed everyone except me.

For a moment, we stood alone in the kitchen.

He seemed uncertain how to begin.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

I almost laughed.

"Tell you what?"

"That she was treating you this way."

"Would you have believed me?"

His expression changed.

"Yes."

"Then you should have asked sooner."

The words escaped before I could reconsider them.

Adrian stared at me.

I expected anger.

Instead, he lowered his eyes.

"You're right."

That answer unsettled me more than a threat would have.

He pulled out a chair.

"Please sit."

"I have work."

"Your work can wait five minutes."

I sat.

He remained standing.

"Why did you cut your own hair?"

"Because I wasn't going to let her decide when the humiliation ended."

For the first time that morning, something resembling admiration crossed his face.

Then he glanced toward my pocket.

"What are you carrying?"

I hesitated before removing the white cloth.

I unfolded it on the table.

Inside lay the dark strands of my grandmother's hair.

Adrian's expression became unreadable.

"Was it important to you?"

"She grew it with me. She brushed it every night. When she died, I promised myself I'd never cut it unless I chose to."

He looked at the hair as though he understood that he was seeing something far more valuable than its appearance suggested.

"I'm sorry, Nora."

I folded the cloth.

"You didn't do it."

"No. But I brought Vanessa into this house, and I allowed her to believe she could treat people however she wanted."

I did not answer.

He continued.

"Starting today, nobody will touch you or threaten your position without answering to me."

I looked directly at him.

"I don't need you to punish everyone for me."

"What do you need?"

"To be treated like an employee. Not a possession. Not a symbol of your authority. Just a person doing her job."

He nodded slowly.

"Understood."

He called Victor back into the kitchen and instructed him to preserve the footage without editing it.

Then Adrian went upstairs to confront Vanessa.

I returned to my work.

By two o'clock, the estate had regained some semblance of order.

At three, a courier arrived carrying a package for Adrian.

The delivery required a signature.

Normally, I checked all incoming parcels because I had learned which vendors frequently made mistakes. That afternoon, I left the package with the office assistant.

Ten minutes later, Victor came looking for me.

"Did you inspect the delivery?"

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because I'm not assigned to deliveries."

His expression hardened.

"Mr. Cole needs to see you."

I followed him to the study.

Adrian stood beside his desk with the package open.

Inside lay a confidential shipping schedule and a handwritten note.

Your house is no longer under your control.

Adrian looked at me.

"Did you see anyone handling this package?"

"No."

"Did you recognize the courier?"

"No."

He studied the note again.

Then he asked, "Has anything else changed since you stopped doing the extra work?"

I understood what he meant.

"Yes."

"What?"

I hesitated.

"The people who depend on me are discovering how much they don't know."

Adrian's expression darkened.

Before he could respond, the office assistant rushed inside.

"Sir, the port office just called. Someone changed tomorrow's departure schedule."

Adrian turned.

"Who authorized it?"

The assistant swallowed.

"The system says you did."

Adrian stared at him.

"I was in Chicago when that change was entered."

The assistant's face drained of color.

Then Victor received a call.

He listened for several seconds before turning toward Adrian.

"Sir, there's been a security breach."

"Where?"

"Your private office."

Adrian looked toward the open package.

Then he turned to me.

"Nora, I need you to tell me everything Vanessa has done since I left."

I took a breath.

"Everything?"

His eyes hardened.

"Everything."

May you like

And as I began to speak, I realized the woman who had cut my hair might have made a much larger mistake than humiliating a maid.

She might have exposed the person who had been quietly protecting Adrian Cole from betrayal for five years.
