Chapter 11 - The Man Behind the Door|

Dr. Thomas Vale agreed to meet Damian at a private clinic outside the city.

He arrived with a cane and a thick folder of medical records. His hands trembled as he set the folder on the table.

“I should have told you years ago,” he said.

“Why didn't you?”

“Because Salvatore made me promise.”

Damian sat opposite him.

“Who is my biological father?”

“His name is Adrian Voss.”

The name meant nothing to Damian.

“Who is he?”

“A businessman. At least, that's what he called himself when I met him. He had interests in shipping, private security, and several companies that operated overseas.”

“Was he involved in organized crime?”

Dr. Vale looked away.

“Yes.”

Damian felt a bitter laugh rise in his throat.

“Another man who built an empire on fear.”

“Adrian was different from Salvatore in one important way. He believed blood gave him the right to own people.”

The doctor explained that Elena Voss had worked at a clinic where Adrian was receiving treatment for a serious illness. Their relationship had been brief and secretive. When Elena became pregnant, Adrian demanded that she surrender the child.

She refused.

Salvatore had helped her disappear and arranged for Damian to be raised under the Moretti name.

“Why did Adrian want me?” Damian asked.

“Because he had no other legitimate heir. He believed a son would secure his position.”

“And when Elena refused?”

“He threatened her.”

Dr. Vale opened the folder.

Inside were letters, medical records, and copies of legal documents. One letter showed that Adrian had continued searching for Damian for years.

Another indicated that Eleanor Price had been paid to monitor the Moretti family.

Damian looked at the doctor.

“Was Eleanor working for him?”

“Initially, yes. Later, she became afraid of what he intended to do.”

“What did he intend?”

Dr. Vale hesitated.

“To reclaim you.”

Damian's jaw tightened.

“I'm thirty-five years old. He can't reclaim me.”

“Adrian doesn't think in terms of ordinary law. He believes everything connected to him can be bought, threatened, or taken.”

The doctor handed Damian a final document.

It was a letter from Elena Voss, written shortly before her disappearance.

If my son ever learns the truth, tell him I wanted him to have a life beyond the men who claim him. Tell him that love is not proven by blood, and that no child should have to earn the right to be safe.

Damian read the letter twice.

For the first time, the story of his birth felt less like a secret about power and more like a warning about what power could do to a family.

He asked Dr. Vale whether Adrian was still alive.

The doctor nodded.

“He lives under a different identity. I believe he is in Chicago.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Damian returned to the estate and gave the documents to his attorney. He also informed the investigators handling the broader case, making it clear that he wanted the matter resolved through lawful channels.

But Adrian moved first.

That evening, a black SUV stopped outside the community center where Claire volunteered. A man approached her with a sealed envelope.

He did not threaten her.

He simply said, “A friend of your husband's asked me to give you this.”

Claire accepted the envelope cautiously.

Inside was a photograph of Damian as a child, standing beside a woman she had never seen.

On the back was a message.

Ask him why his father chose you.

Claire called Damian.

He answered immediately.

“Are you safe?”

“Yes. Someone just delivered a photograph.”

She described it.

Damian went silent.

“Claire, listen to me. Don't go anywhere with that man. Don't answer any further messages. I'll arrange for your lawyer to contact the police.”

“Who is the woman in the photograph?”

“My biological mother.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“You have another secret.”

“Yes.”

“Is this why you were so afraid of losing the empire?”

“No. I was afraid of losing control. I used the empire as an excuse.”

She appreciated the honesty, but the photograph disturbed her.

“Why would someone tell me to ask why your father chose me?”

“I don't know yet.”

After the call, Claire gave the envelope to her lawyer.

The photograph was examined for signs of manipulation. It appeared genuine, but the message on the back was new.

The handwriting matched neither Salvatore's nor Elena's.

The investigators traced the delivery to a private courier service paid through a shell company.

The company was registered to Adrian Voss.

That night, Damian received a call from an unknown number.

A man's voice spoke calmly.

“Hello, son.”

Damian froze.

“Adrian?”

“Your father told you about me.”

“He told me nothing. Other people have spent thirty-five years lying to me.”

A soft laugh came through the phone.

“Then perhaps it's time we met.”

“Why are you contacting Claire?”

“Because she understands something you never did.”

“What?”

“That a man can possess an empire and still lose everything that matters.”

Damian gripped the phone.

“If you go near her again, I will—”

“You will what? Threaten me? Send men? Prove that you are exactly like me?”

The line went silent for a moment.

Then Adrian added, “I have something that belongs to you, Damian.”

“What?”

“Your mother's final letter.”

The call ended.

Damian stood in the dark office, listening to the silence.

May you like

For the first time, he understood that the greatest threat to his future might not be a rival trying to take his empire.

It might be the man who believed Damian was his property.
