Chapter 5 - The Empty Nursery

There are moments when a mother's body understands terror before her mind does.

I ran.

I did not remember climbing the stairs.

I did not remember Dominic shouting orders.

I remembered only one thing.

Lily was gone.

Her stuffed rabbit lay on the carpet outside Ethan’s room.

I picked it up.

The world tilted.

“LILY!”

Dominic entered Ethan’s bedroom.

The window was locked.

The bathroom empty.

No sign of struggle.

One security camera covered the corridor.

Its feed had frozen at 8:43 a.m.

“Again,” Dominic said.

His voice was barely human.

The cameras had been compromised again.

Paolo appeared at the far end of the hallway.

Dominic turned.

For a second, everyone stopped.

“You.”

Paolo lifted both hands.

“I just arrived from the security office.”

Dominic crossed the distance.

He grabbed Paolo by the front of his jacket and shoved him against the wall.

“Where is my son?”

“I don't know!”

“Your signature is on Isabella’s insurance papers.”

Paolo's face changed.

“What papers?”

“You witnessed the amendments.”

“No.”

Dominic tightened his grip.

“Do not lie to me.”

“I didn't sign anything.”

Daniel arrived behind us carrying the phone.

“Victor forged Dominic’s documents. Maybe he forged Paolo’s.”

Dominic still did not release him.

Then I noticed something.

The housekeeping cart.

It sat outside Ethan’s room.

Wrong.

Housekeeping had been suspended during lockdown.

“Dominic.”

Nobody heard.

“Dominic!”

He looked at me.

I pointed.

“That cart shouldn't be here.”

Paolo immediately moved toward it.

A folded blanket covered the lower shelf.

He pulled it away.

Empty.

But a small yellow bow lay inside.

Lily's.

My knees weakened.

“They used the service elevator,” I whispered.

I knew every hidden corridor in the mansion.

Six years of cleaning taught me routes the family rarely used.

“The old nursery wing.”

Dominic looked at me.

“There’s a service passage behind the linen room.”

We ran.

The passage had not been used regularly in years.

At its end was a narrow staircase leading to the old east wing.

Dust.

Storage furniture.

Covered paintings.

Then we heard a child crying.

Ethan.

Dominic sprinted.

We reached an old nursery.

Locked.

Paolo kicked the door once.

Twice.

It opened.

Ethan sat on the floor.

Alone.

Dominic dropped beside him.

“Ethan.”

His son threw both arms around him.

“Dad!”

“Where is Lily?”

Ethan pointed toward another door.

“The man took her.”

My blood stopped.

“What man?”

“The man with the burned hand.”

Victor.

I ran toward the door.

Paolo blocked me.

“Wait.”

I nearly screamed at him.

“My daughter is through there!”

“If Victor has a weapon—”

“I don't care!”

“I do.”

That stopped me.

Paolo lowered his voice.

“Claire, if something happens to you, Lily loses the one person she trusts most. Let us go first.”

Dominic held Ethan.

“Where did he take her?”

“He said she saw too much.”

Ethan began crying.

“And he said if I followed, Lily would get hurt.”

Dominic kissed his son's hair.

“You did the right thing.”

I felt like I couldn't breathe.

Then Ethan held something out.

A silver box.

The same object Lily had described.

“He dropped it.”

Dr. Harris would later confirm it had carried the allergen.

Evidence.

Real evidence.

But I didn't care about evidence.

I wanted my daughter.

Paolo opened the second door.

It led downstairs.

Through a covered walkway.

Toward the old greenhouse.

We moved quietly.

Dominic left Ethan with Daniel and two guards.

Then he came with us.

At the greenhouse entrance, we heard Victor's voice.

“You should have stayed quiet.”

Then Lily.

“Mommy says lying is bad.”

My heart nearly burst.

Victor laughed.

“Your mommy talks too much.”

I lunged toward the door.

Dominic caught my arm.

“Wait.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

“He has my child!”

“I know.”

His face was full of the same terror I felt.

“Give me ten seconds.”

Paolo circled toward a side entrance.

Dominic opened the main door.

Victor stood inside.

One burned hand rested on Lily’s shoulder.

She looked tiny beside him.

“Mommy!”

I nearly ran forward.

Victor tightened his grip.

“Stay.”

Dominic stopped.

“Let her go.”

Victor smiled.

“So calm.”

“What do you want?”

“What I have always wanted.”

“My company?”

“My place.”

“You had one.”

“Behind you.”

Victor’s bitterness was almost childish.

“Your father gave you everything. The name. The businesses. The respect. Then you decided to throw it all away because Isabella wanted you to become respectable.”

Dominic’s eyes hardened.

“You killed her.”

Victor’s smile disappeared.

That was answer enough.

“You caused her crash.”

“She caused it by digging where she shouldn't.”

I heard Dominic inhale.

“You tried to kill my wife.”

Victor shrugged.

“I solved a problem.”

I expected Dominic to attack.

He did not.

Because Lily was between them.

He forced himself to remain still.

“And Ethan?”

“Another problem.”

Something terrifying passed across Dominic’s face.

“You're talking about an eight-year-old boy.”

“I’m talking about an inheritance.”

“You're sick.”

“No. I understand this family better than you do.”

Lily suddenly stomped on Victor’s foot.

He cursed.

His grip loosened.

“RUN!” I screamed.

Lily ran.

Victor reached for her.

I moved before anyone else.

I grabbed my daughter and turned my body between them.

Victor shoved me.

I hit the greenhouse table hard enough to lose my breath.

Dominic crossed the room.

Fast.

He slammed Victor backward against a metal support.

A struggle followed—brief, violent, controlled.

Paolo entered through the side door and pulled Victor away before Dominic could lose control.

Lily screamed my name.

I held her.

“I’m here.”

“Mommy!”

“I’m here.”

Dominic stood over Victor.

His fists were clenched.

Victor smiled through a split lip.

“You can't kill me anymore, cousin.”

Dominic stared at him.

“No.”

He looked toward Lily.

Then Ethan, who had appeared outside with Daniel.

“No, I can’t.”

Police sirens approached.

Victor's expression changed.

Dominic stepped back.

“You wanted me to stay the man my father created.”

He looked at the approaching officers.

“I’m done being that man.”

Victor was handcuffed.

As officers led him out, Paolo stopped beside Dominic.

“There’s something you need to know.”

“What?”

Paolo looked toward Isabella’s old phone.

“My signature on those insurance papers wasn't forged.”

Dominic stared.

Paolo swallowed.

May you like

“I signed them.”

And just when we thought Victor's arrest had ended the nightmare, the man Dominic trusted most confessed he had been part of it from the beginning.
