Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO BE SAVED“Mrs. Vale,” the taller man said.

The woman flinched.

Lena noticed.

Mia noticed too.

The boy noticed most of all.

“Eli,” the woman whispered. “Get behind me.”

The boy did not move.

He remained behind Lena.

The taller man sighed.

“We don't want any trouble.”

“That’s interesting,” Lena said.

The man looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because people who don't want trouble usually don't follow a woman into a restaurant with two men.”

A few customers turned in their seats.

Someone reached for a phone.

The man's smile disappeared.

“This is a private matter.”

“No,” Lena said. “It stopped being private when you frightened a child.”

The second man stepped forward.

“We have legal authority.”

“Then show me.”

The man hesitated.

That was all Lena needed.

She looked at the woman.

“Are they police?”

The woman shook her head.

“No.”

“Are you in danger?”

The woman did not answer.

The taller man reached for her arm.

Eli screamed.

“Don't touch my mom!”

The entire restaurant erupted.

Chairs scraped backward.

Phones came out.

Mia immediately moved toward the kitchen.

“I'm calling Grandma.”

Lena grabbed the restaurant phone.

“Everyone stay calm.”

The taller man cursed.

“This is not what you think.”

“Then explain it.”

The woman suddenly spoke.

“My name is Nora Vale.”

Her voice trembled.

“I worked for the Hartwell Foundation.”

Lena froze.

The name changed the atmosphere.

Hartwell Foundation.

Eleanor.

Anna.

Mia.

Everything was connected.

Nora continued.

“I found something I wasn't supposed to find.”

The two men exchanged a look.

Lena's stomach tightened.

“What did you find?”

Nora looked at the glass frame beside the register.

At the three coins.

Then back at Lena.

“Money.”

The room became still.

“Money stolen from children,” Nora said.

The taller man stepped forward.

“That is a lie.”

Nora laughed bitterly.

“Is it?”

She opened her bag and pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found accounts. Payments. Fake charities. Missing housing funds. Emergency food money that never reached the people it was supposed to help.”

Lena stared at the drive.

“How much?”

Nora swallowed.

“More than twenty million dollars.”

Someone in the restaurant gasped.

The man in the dark coat stepped toward her.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

Nora's face hardened.

“I know exactly what I'm doing.”

Then she looked at Lena.

“I came here because I knew Eleanor would trust you.”

Lena felt a chill.

“Why?”

“Because three years ago, she told me something.”

“What?”

Nora glanced at Mia.

“She said if anything ever happened to her, I should find the woman who gave a hungry child food when nobody else would.”

Mia stepped forward.

“What happened to Grandma?”

Nora looked away.

Lena's heart began to beat faster.

“What happened to Eleanor?”

Nora finally answered.

“She disappeared.”

Mia stopped breathing.

The restaurant door opened.

A man in a black suit stood outside.

Behind him were two police officers.

The man smiled.

“Lena Morris?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Daniel Hart.”

Mia went pale.

Nora whispered one word.

“Run.”

Lena looked at him.

Daniel Hart smiled wider.

“I’m Eleanor’s son.”

May you like

And then he added:

“She has been missing for six days.”
