Chapter 5 - The Engagement Was a Trap

By Christmas morning, my engagement was public wreckage.

Reporters waited beyond the gates. Financial networks speculated about the Moretti-Vitale merger. Someone leaked that Isabella had left the party early. One gossip site claimed I had thrown a champagne bottle at her father.

I hadn't.

Yet.

Carlo called me at 7:03 a.m.

“Merry Christmas.”

“Where is Marcus?”

Pause.

“Who?”

“Do not insult me.”

He laughed softly.

“Long night?”

“Where is he?”

“You've always been dramatic when women are involved.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Sophia and Lily are not part of our business.”

“There you go.”

“Go where?”

“Calling the child Lily.”

My entire body went still.

I had never told Carlo her name.

“Thank you.”

Silence.

“For what?”

“For confirming you know exactly who she is.”

He hung up.

Enzo traced nothing useful.

Burner network.

Expected.

At eight, Isabella returned.

No makeup.

No diamonds.

Jeans beneath a winter coat.

My mother seemed surprised.

I wasn't sure whether Isabella had ever worn jeans in my house.

“I need to talk to you.”

Sophia stood near the breakfast-room window while Lily ate pancakes under Rosa’s supervision in the adjoining room.

Isabella noticed Sophia.

Their eyes met.

Sophia said:

“You're Isabella.”

“Yes.”

“I'm sorry.”

Isabella blinked.

“For what?”

“This isn't your fault.”

I almost interrupted.

Isabella beat me.

“Some of it is.”

Sophia studied her.

Isabella removed a flash drive from her coat.

“My father kept a private accounting server.”

I stared.

“You stole his files?”

“Copied.”

“Why?”

“Because after last night I went home and realized if I did nothing else, I would spend the rest of my life becoming him.”

That sentence changed my opinion of her slightly.

She handed me the drive.

“My father isn't only interested in Moretti shares. He has been moving money through your old construction partnerships.”

“How much?”

“More than eighty million.”

Enzo swore.

Isabella continued.

“He used Moretti shell companies to hide Vitale debt. The marriage was supposed to merge enough legitimate assets to refinance everything before auditors noticed.”

I stared.

“We were not getting married.”

“We were refinancing your father’s worst decisions.”

“Yes.”

Sophia whispered, “And Lily interfered.”

Isabella nodded.

“If Dominic formally recognizes a biological child, the generational trust activates. Shares Carlo expected to become part of the marital structure move beyond his reach.”

“So he kept us hidden for money,” Sophia said.

“No.”

Isabella looked toward Lily.

“Money was the beginning.”

“What was the rest?”

“My father is under investigation.”

I turned.

“For what?”

“Federal bid-rigging. Bribery. Illegal payments.”

“Since when?”

“Six months.”

“Why wasn't I told?”

“Because one of the investigators is looking at Moretti companies too.”

Enzo stared at me.

Now the trap made sense.

Carlo needed marriage to create shared legal and financial interests before indictments arrived.

If his companies fell, Moretti assets could stabilize Vitale holdings.

If he controlled enough Moretti shares, he could negotiate from strength.

But Lily disrupted ownership.

Sophia asked:

“How did your father find out about her?”

Isabella hesitated.

“I think your father told him.”

My father.

Lorenzo.

“Before he died?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Then my mother entered carrying a small wooden box.

“I do.”

We all turned.

Victoria looked twenty years older than she had at the party.

“Lorenzo regretted what he did.”

I laughed without humor.

“Conveniently late.”

“Yes.”

My mother accepted that.

“Six months before he died, he changed the trust.”

“That explains Lily’s inheritance.”

“No.”

She put the box on the table.

“He did more.”

Inside was a copy of a notarized document.

Lorenzo created a fund for Sophia and his unborn grandchild.

Not hush money.

An inheritance.

He instructed Carlo to hold it temporarily because Vittorio, my late uncle, was still alive then and might challenge it.

I stared.

“You trusted Carlo with Lily’s trust?”

“Your father did.”

“And Carlo hid it.”

“Yes.”

The fund should now have been worth nearly eighteen million dollars.

Sophia laughed in disbelief.

“I've been cleaning hotel rooms.”

Nobody spoke.

“I've worked nights while Lily slept at my neighbor’s.”

Her eyes filled.

“And eighteen million dollars was sitting somewhere under her name?”

Isabella whispered:

“If it still exists.”

I looked at the flash drive.

We would find out.

Hours later, Enzo and an independent forensic accountant confirmed the money had been drained through Vitale-controlled investments.

Carlo had stolen my daughter's inheritance.

But the biggest shock remained in my father’s instructions.

One paragraph read:

When Dominic is free of my influence, Victoria should tell him the truth and allow him to choose whether he wants Sophia and the child in his life. No one is to decide for him again.

My father had eventually understood exactly what he had done.

And still nobody told me.

I looked at Victoria.

“Why?”

She cried.

“Because he died three weeks later.”

“That doesn't answer.”

“I was ashamed.”

There it was.

Not protection.

Not strategy.

Shame.

“I told myself Sophia was safe. You were rebuilding after Lorenzo’s death. Then one year became two.”

“And Carlo?”

“He told me revealing everything would destroy the company.”

I laughed.

“Again, the company.”

My mother looked down.

I had spent my whole life watching adults sacrifice people to institutions and calling it responsibility.

No more.

I stood.

“Enzo.”

“Yes?”

“Freeze every joint Moretti-Vitale transaction we legally can.”

He nodded.

“Independent audit of every company.”

“Yes.”

“Contact federal counsel.”

Everyone stared.

My mother whispered:

“Dominic.”

I looked at her.

“I am done protecting a family name at the expense of actual family.”

Sophia watched me carefully.

I continued.

“Whatever crimes are ours, we answer for them.”

Isabella whispered:

“My father will come after you.”

“He already did.”

Sophia moved toward me.

“And Lily?”

I looked through the doorway.

My daughter was attempting to stack strawberries on top of a pancake.

“Lily gets a childhood.”

The answer came easily.

“No trust wars. No Moretti business. No photographs in newspapers if I can prevent it.”

Sophia's face softened.

Then Enzo’s phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He looked at me.

“Marcus Vale was found.”

“Where?”

“Private airfield.”

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Did they arrest him?”

“No.”

Enzo swallowed.

“He boarded a Vitale jet forty minutes ago.”

“Destination?”

“Unknown.”

Then Isabella’s phone buzzed.

She read one message.

Turned pale.

“My father.”

“What did he say?”

She handed me the screen.

Come home, Isabella. Bring the Carter file if you want Luca to stay out of prison.

Sophia stared.

Carlo had just threatened his own son to control his daughter.

May you like

And Isabella finally understood she had never been his heir.

Only another piece on the board.
