Chapter 3 - Melanie Carter

The studio director's office at Northline Dance Conservatory was small, cluttered with recital programs and dance shoes waiting to be claimed from lost and found, and entirely private in a way the crowded lobby outside had not been.

"Mrs. Pierce, could I speak with you before you leave?" Melanie Carter had asked, her expression unreadable in a way that had immediately made my stomach tighten.

Nathan had tried to intervene. "We're heading to dinner," he'd said quickly, already steering Lila toward the door.

But Melanie had kept her eyes on me, calm and unhurried, and repeated that it would only take a minute. Something in her tone had made it clear this wasn't a casual request.

Once the office door closed behind us, Melanie turned her computer screen toward me. "I need to show you something," she said, "and I want to be careful about how I frame this, because I'm not entirely sure what it means, but I think you should be the one to see it first, not read about it secondhand."

On Lila's family profile in the studio's parent portal, my own name was still listed correctly as her mother. Nathan was listed, correctly, as her father. But beneath his name, a third adult had been added, identified with a specific, formal label: Brooke Pierce — Stepmother.

I stared at the screen, feeling the floor tilt slightly beneath me in a way that had nothing to do with the office's fluorescent lighting.

"Brooke Pierce," I repeated slowly.

"That's the name in our system," Melanie said carefully. "But I did some checking, because something about it felt off to me, given everything I understood about your situation from Lila's emergency contact forms. The woman who's been picking Lila up twice this month, whom I assumed was 'Brooke Pierce' based on the portal listing — her actual legal name, according to the ID she showed at pickup, is Brooke Dalton."

I felt something cold settle into my chest. "She's not using his last name. She's not married to him. We're still legally married, Nathan and I — the divorce isn't even finalized."

"That's what concerned me," Melanie said. "The system log shows the profile change was made by Nathan himself, six weeks ago, using his parent portal credentials. He specifically labeled her as 'stepmother,' with his own name, before your divorce was final, before — as far as I understand — any actual marriage between them exists."

I sat very still, processing the full shape of what this meant. Nathan hadn't simply brought Brooke to a recital against Lila's wishes. He had, weeks earlier, quietly and officially designated her as Lila's stepmother in the school's own records — a designation with no legal basis whatsoever, made unilaterally, without my knowledge or consent, while we were both still legally married and our custody arrangement remained actively contested.

"Has she picked Lila up from other things?" I asked. "Beyond dance?"

"I can only speak to our records here," Melanie said. "But given the level of access the portal designation would have granted her — emergency contact status, authorized pickup, medical information visibility — I'd strongly encourage you to check with Lila's school and any other activities as well."

I thanked Melanie, my voice steadier than I felt, and asked her to preserve the system logs showing when and how the change had been made.

"Of course," she said. "And Mrs. Pierce — for what it's worth, Lila is a wonderful, resilient kid. Whatever's happening with the adults in her life, that hasn't touched who she is on that stage. I just wanted you to have accurate information, not whatever version you might have pieced together from the lobby tonight."

I walked back out into the now-quieter lobby, where Nathan was waiting with visible impatience, Lila still holding the bouquet with Brooke's name pointedly displayed on the card, and understood that the folder in my bottom desk drawer was about to grow considerably thicker.

"What did she want?" Nathan asked.

"Just a scheduling question," I said, which was, technically, not entirely a lie — though the schedule in question was the timeline I would now need to build with Dana, documenting exactly how far Nathan had already gone in quietly restructuring our daughter's life without either my knowledge or my consent.
