Chapter 11 - The Coastal Encounter

The crisp autumn air carried the scent of salt water as Claire walked along the Port Angeles pier, pushing a stroller containing a giggling, two-year-old Owen in a bright yellow raincoat. Her heart skipped a beat when a sleek black town car pulled up quietly near the marina walkway, and a familiar, older man stepped out onto the wooden planks. Graham Ashford looked older, his hair dusted with silver at the temples, leaning slightly on a cane as he approached them with hesitant, sorrowful steps.
Claire instinctively stepped in front of the stroller, her eyes hardening into an unyielding shield as she demanded to know why he had tracked her down. Graham stopped a few feet away, tears welling in his eyes as he looked at the healthy, vibrant little boy who carried his features. He didn't offer excuses or corporate justifications; instead, he sank slowly to his knees on the wooden pier, bowing his head in profound humility. “I didn't come to take him, Claire,” Graham choked out, his voice breaking with genuine grief. “I came to apologize for destroying the only good thing I ever had.”
