Chapter 2 - The Mask SlipsThe silence inside the grand foyer was so heavy you could hear the water dripping from my dress onto the polished tile floor.

Daniel bounded down the remaining steps, his eyes wide with horror, rushing straight to my side. “Mom! My God! Are you okay? What... what is going on here? Why are you dressed like that?!”
He wrapped his blazer around my wet shoulders, his hands trembling with rage and confusion.
Vanessa frantically tried to recover her composure, stepping forward with her hands held out. “Daniel, sweetie! Listen to me! I had no idea it was your mother! It was an accident! I thought she was just an incompetent worker from the temp agency!”
I wiped a drop of water from my jawline and looked at her. “And that makes it acceptable, Vanessa? If I were just an elderly worker trying to earn a living, throwing dirty water over my head and calling me disgusting is how you treat human beings?”
“No! That’s not what I meant!” Vanessa squeaked, her voice rising in pitched desperation as she looked at Daniel’s furious face. “Daniel, darling, you know me! I’m kind! I was just stressed! She was provoking me! She was mocking my wedding plans!”
Daniel turned to her, his jaw set like concrete. “My mother doesn't provoke people, Vanessa. She built the hospital wing down the street. She built this entire estate.”
“I didn't know!” Vanessa wailed, tears of frustration streaming down her perfectly contoured cheeks. “Why would she wear a disguise?! She set me up! This isn't fair! She trapped me!”
“A trap only catches a animal that chooses to bite, Vanessa,” I said calmly, holding up the small digital recorder. “Every insult, every threat, and every demand you made over the last three hours is recorded on this chip. Including when you told me you were only marrying Daniel because his family trust owned forty percent of the regional port development.”
Daniel froze. He looked at Vanessa as if seeing her face for the very first time. “You said what?”
Vanessa’s eyes flared with sudden, ugly panic. “She’s lying! She edited it! Daniel, don't listen to her! She’s trying to ruin our happiness because she wants to keep you all to herself!”
I reached into my wet apron pocket and pulled out a secondary item—a folded sheet of paper I had retrieved from Vanessa’s open leather portfolio while she was upstairs demanding a foot massage.
“And what about this, Daniel?” I asked gently, handing him the document.
Daniel unfolded it. It was a preliminary pre-nuptial amendment drafted by a high-priced corporate lawyer in New York, designed to waive the standard five-year waiting clause on his private trust fund in the event of an early divorce.

Daniel read the terms, his hands shaking violently. “You... you had your lawyer draft a divorce payout clause before we even stood at the altar?”
Vanessa backed away toward the front door, her polished, angelic image completely shattering into pieces right before our eyes.
