Chapter 3 - The Gatebell Rings

Fifteen years after being dropped in the rain with a garbage bag, I stood in the grand entrance gallery of my estate on an overcast October morning.

I was dressed for an evening charity gala at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, wearing an extraordinary couture bridal-cut ballgown made of cream silk, adorned with hundreds of hand-sewn ivory floral roses and crystal beading. My hair was styled in soft, cascading blonde waves, and a diamond necklace from my private vault rested against my collarbone.

My head of estate security, Thomas, stepped into the marble foyer holding a tablet displaying the live exterior gate camera feed.

"Miss Sterling," Thomas said with professional discretion. "There is a couple outside the main gate intercom. They have been standing in the rain for over an hour. They are demanding to see the homeowner, claiming they are your biological parents."

I looked down at the tablet screen.

Standing beneath the wrought-iron archway, soaked by the cold drizzle, were Richard and Eleanor Vance.

They were completely unrecognizable from the glamorous couple who had discarded me fifteen years ago. Richard's expensive suits were gone; he wore a soiled, threadbare cotton work shirt with torn sleeves, worn-out denim trousers, and grease-stained boots. His beard was wild and unkempt, his face hollowed by age and defeat. Eleanor knelt beside him on the wet flagstones, wrapped in a tattered, muddy cardigan over frayed trousers, her graying hair matted against her skull.

The golden life they had stolen my name to maintain had collapsed entirely.

"Open the main iron gates, Thomas," I said smoothly, folding my arms across my chest. "And escort them into the front courtyard."
