Chapter 9 - Boston Learned Nathaniel Had a Daughter
The news leaked eventually.
Photographers appeared outside school.
Headlines called Maisie “THE SECRET CALDWELL HEIRESS.”
I wanted to burn newspapers.
Nathaniel’s legal team issued one statement:
Maisie Walker is a child, not a public figure. Her privacy will be protected.
No confirmation of inheritance.
No photograph.
No exploitation.
Nathaniel reorganized his companies.
He sold businesses tied to illegal operations.
Cooperated with federal investigations triggered by Patrick’s drive.
Paid fines.
Several former associates were prosecuted.
Nathaniel lost money.
A lot.
He seemed relieved.
“I spent years protecting an empire I didn’t even like.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought if I gave it up, the people who built it won.”
“And now?”
“I have someone more important to inherit my last name than my mistakes.”
I kissed him for first time after he said that.
Slow.

Terrifying.
Right.
