THE EMPIRE HE BUILT ON MY NAME / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Office Door

At sixty-four, I returned to the old Carter Technologies headquarters.

The company was moving.

Patrick invited former board members for a farewell.

The executive floor had been renovated.

Still, I recognized the hallway.

My body recognized it before my mind.

The place where Ethan followed me.

The elevator.

The office.

That office.

The door stood open.

Empty.

No desk.

No chair.

No rice.

I stopped.

Daniel squeezed my hand.

“Want to leave?”

“No.”

I entered.

The skyline was the same.

Chicago below.

For years, I thought my life divided here.

Before door.

After door.

Ethan entered behind us.

He stopped.

“Oh.”

We stood quietly.

Then Ethan said, “I’m sorry.”

I smiled.

“You’ve said that.”

“I know.”

He looked around.

“I’ve never been back in this room since the board moved me.”

“Really?”

“No.”

Then he laughed sadly.

“I used to think this was the room where you destroyed my career.”

I looked at him.

“And now?”

“It’s the room where I destroyed my marriage.”

Progress.

“And saved my life, eventually.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“Don’t give me too much credit.”

He smiled.

“No.”

Then he said, “You know what I remember?”

“What?”

“The lunch.”

I laughed.

“Of course.”

“You made lemon cookies.”

I froze.

“You noticed?”

“After you left.”

He looked down.

“There was one under the chair.”

Something unexpectedly painful moved through me.

I had packed his favorite cookie.

That was who I was before entering.

A wife bringing lunch.

Love and betrayal occupying the same minute.

“I hated myself when I saw it.”

I believed him.

We stood there.

No tears.

No dramatic closure.

Then Patrick called us into another room.

We walked out.

I did not look back.

Because the office was no longer sacred.

It was architecture.

May you like

Just walls.

The story lived elsewhere.
