Chapter 3 - The Threat at the Hospital DoorBy 2:00 AM, the surgery was over. Dr. Evans returned, looking exhausted but relieved. "We repaired the laceration, Mrs. Vance. Lily is stable. She’s resting in Room 402. But she will need a week of intensive monitoring."

"Thank you, Doctor," I said, my heart finally returning to its normal rhythm.
I walked down the quiet, dimly lit corridor to her room. Lily lay in the bed, her face pale under the fluorescent lights, but her breathing was deep and even. I pulled a chair close to her side, holding her hand, watching the rhythmic rise and fall of her chest.
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors at the end of the hallway burst open.
Grant strode down the corridor, his face flushed with rage, his expensive leather jacket dripping with rain. He looked like the wealthy, respectable contractor our neighbors loved, but I could see the raw, volatile malice vibrating beneath his skin.
"Claire!" he growled, grabbing my arm and pulling me out of the room into the hallway. "You ignored my calls. You ignored my texts. Do you have any idea what the board of the school district is saying? They saw an ambulance outside our house! You are destroying my reputation!"
"Your reputation is built on the bones of my daughter, Grant," I said, violently tearing my arm from his grip. "Look inside that room. Look at what you did to her."
"I was teaching her respect!" he hissed, taking a step closer, trying to use his height to intimidate me. "She was talking back to me. She was threatening to tell you about the money. I had to discipline her, Claire. It’s my house. My rules."
"It's not your house anymore, Grant," I said, pulling my phone from my pocket. "I’ve already initiated an emergency freeze on your corporate accounts under the state’s domestic protection financial laws. By morning, Vance Construction won't have enough capital to buy a box of nails."
May you like
Grant’s face went completely pale, his eyes wide with a sudden, desperate panic. "You... you can't do that. That’s corporate funds. You’re a quiet housewife, Claire. You don't have the authority."
"I built your corporate tax structure, Grant," I whispered, stepping closer to him, letting him feel the absolute coldness of my wrath. "I know every single dummy account, every offshore registration, and every fake invoice you've signed over the last five years. I am your chief financial compliance officer. And as of ten minutes ago, I resigned."
