Chapter 4 - The Audit of the Family RingThe dining room erupted into wild chaos!

Thomasâs sister Lydia shrieked in horror, dropping her wine glass, while cousins scrambled out of their chairs, terrified of being linked to Thomasâs betrayal.
âYou canât do this to my mother!â Thomas roared, slamming his fist onto the table, making the fine china rattle. âThis is my familyâs house! My grandfather built this place!â
âYour grandfather built it on honor, Thomas,â I countered quietly, stepping around the table toward Amber.
I reached down, picked up the Whitmore family ring from Amberâs plate, wiped the red wine stain from the brilliant diamond using my linen napkin, and slipped it safely into my velvet purse.
Amber burst into tears, grabbing her designer coat, and ran out of the dining room through the side doors in complete, degrading embarrassment.
Patricia fell back into her chair, clutching her chest, her arrogant facade completely shattered. âEleanor... please... you are my daughter-in-law... we can talk about this like family!â
âEighteen years ago, Patricia,â I said softly, looking down at her, âyou told me I was 'too quiet' to be a real Whitmore. You were wrong. I wasn't quiet. I was just keeping score.â

Two uniformed estate security guards stepped into the dining room, standing by the main entrance doors.
âMister Bellamy,â I said, turning my back on Thomas. âLock the main gates. Tonight, the quiet steward takes control.â
