THE COLONEL’S RECKONING / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Bail HearingJudge Eleanor Vance took her seat on the elevated wooden bench. She was a woman in her late sixties with silver hair, sharp hazel eyes, and a reputation for absolute, unyielding fairness. She adjusted her glasses and looked down at the documents spread across her desk.

“We are here in the matter of the United States versus Conrad Vale and Grant Vale,” Judge Vance announced, her voice booming clearly through the silent courtroom. “The defense has submitted a motion for pre-trial release on a ten-million-dollar cash bond. I will hear arguments from the Assistant United States Attorney first.”

The federal prosecutor, a sharp young woman named Sarah Jenkins, stood up from the prosecution table.

“Your Honor,” Sarah began, her voice steady and commanding. “The government strongly opposes any form of bail for either defendant. Conrad and Grant Vale are charged with multiple counts of federal procurement fraud, treasonous endangerment of military personnel, and witness tampering. Furthermore, we have conclusive evidence that the defendants possess substantial offshore liquid assets in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland, making them extreme flight risks.”

Richard Sterling, the defense attorney, immediately stood up, adjusting his expensive Italian suit.

“Your Honor, if I may!” Sterling interrupted smoothly. “My clients are respected business leaders who have contributed hundreds of millions of dollars to the defense of this nation. They have zero criminal records! The government’s case relies entirely on digital files provided by Miss Emma Vance—a former employee who was recently terminated for corporate negligence and who suffers from documented emotional volatility!”

Judge Vance raised her hand, stopping Sterling mid-sentence. “Mr. Sterling, save the theatrical press statements for the media outside. This is a court of law.”

She turned her eyes toward our table, where Emma sat quietly between me and the prosecution team.

“Miss Vance,” Judge Vance said softly. “I understand you have submitted a formal victim impact statement and medical documentation regarding your current physical condition?”

Emma took a deep breath, stood up from her chair, and walked gracefully to the podium in front of the judge’s bench. Her voice was slightly nervous at first, but as she spoke, it grew stronger and more resolute with every passing second.

“Yes, Your Honor,” Emma said, looking straight up at the judge. “On June 22nd, when I informed Grant Vale that I had discovered the altered inspection certificates for the military helicopter parts, he assaulted me in the study of his home. He fractured my arm, bruised my neck, and explicitly threatened to use his family’s wealth to destroy my father’s life if I spoke to federal authorities.”

Grant leaned forward at the defense table, his face twisting in rage. “She’s lying! She fell!” he shouted, slamming his chained hands against the wood.

“Quiet in my courtroom, Mr. Vale!” Judge Vance warned sternly, banging her gavel sharply. “One more outburst from you, and I will hold you in summary contempt!”

Emma didn't even look back at Grant. She pulled a sealed white envelope from her folder and handed it to the court bailiff.

“Your Honor,” Emma continued, “submitted in that envelope are certified medical records from St. Vincent’s Hospital, including X-rays of my fractured wrist and forensic photography of the soft-tissue bruising across my collarbone. In addition, we have provided an audio recording taken from my smartwatch during the assault.”

Conrad Vale’s head snapped toward his son, his eyes wide with horror. “What?! A watch recording?!”

The federal prosecutor, Sarah Jenkins, stepped forward. “With the court’s permission, the government would like to play Exhibit C—a thirty-second audio file captured on Miss Vance’s encrypted cloud server.”

Judge Vance nodded. “Proceed.”

Sarah pressed a button on her tablet. A crisp, clear audio recording echoed through the courtroom speakers:

“You think anyone is going to believe you, Emma?” Grant’s voice filled the room, cold, arrogant, and vicious. “My dad owns the judges in this state. You keep your mouth shut, sign the compliance approval, and marry me on July 12th, or I’ll make sure your pathetic old father spends the rest of his miserable life in a federal prison for corporate espionage. Do you understand me?!”

A terrifying silence fell over the courtroom.

The sound of a heavy physical struggle followed on the recording, accompanied by Emma’s sharp cry of pain as her bone fractured, followed by Grant’s cold voice whispering: “Look at what you made me do.”

In the gallery, several journalists gasped loudly, their pens flying across their notebooks.

Richard Sterling, the high-priced defense lawyer, slowly sat back down in his chair, his face pale, unable to say a single word. His entire defense strategy had been pulverized in thirty seconds.

Judge Vance slowly removed her glasses. She looked down at Grant and Conrad Vale with an expression of pure, icy disgust.

“Mr. Sterling,” Judge Vance said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, deadly quiet tone. “You spoke earlier about your clients being respected business leaders. What I see sitting at that table are two dangerous, manipulative predators who pose a direct, ongoing threat to public safety and the administration of justice.”

She picked up her gavel.

“The defense motion for bail is denied in its entirety,” Judge Vance ruled forcefully. “Conrad Vale and Grant Vale will remain in federal custody without bond pending trial. Furthermore, a permanent federal protective order is issued for Miss Emma Vance and Colonel Arthur Vance. Court is adjourned!”

BANG!

The gavel struck the sound block like a thunderclap.

Grant began to weep hysterically as federal marshals grabbed him by his orange jumpsuit and dragged him out through the rear holding doors. Conrad Vale sat frozen, staring blankly at the floor as the harsh reality of his life sentence set in.

Emma turned to me, tears of triumph glistening in her eyes, and wrapped her arms tightly around my neck.
