Chapter 13 - Blake Became Someone Else’s Good Man

Five years after our divorce, Blake married.
Her name was Maya Chen, a financial literacy teacher.
Of course.
I heard from Constance first.
“He wants to invite you.”
I laughed.
“This family enjoys unusual weddings.”
Maya wrote to me personally.
Evelyn, I know enough of the history to understand if this is uncomfortable. There is no expectation. Blake speaks about your marriage without bitterness and with responsibility. I thought you should hear that from someone who sees him now.
I liked her immediately.
Annoying.
Adrian said, “Go if you want.”
I did.
Small ceremony in Connecticut.
Sienna not there.
Harrison obviously not.
Constance cried.
Blake looked calm.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“Thanks.”
“For?”
“Believing people can become more than the worst thing they did.”
“I didn’t come for absolution.”
“I know.”
Maya joined us.
She had warm eyes.
Direct manner.
“You’re terrifying,” she told me.
I laughed.
“Blake says that.”
“He says accurate things now.”
Good.
Their marriage felt different.
Not because Maya was better than me.
Because Blake was different.
That distinction mattered.
During vows, I felt no regret.
Only tenderness for a chapter that ended badly but had once contained real love.
Adrian held my hand.
No insecurity.
I leaned against him.
Later Constance whispered, “I never thought we’d all be in one room.”
“Neither did I.”
“Is this forgiveness?”
“Maybe logistics.”
May you like
She laughed.
Fair.
