Chapter 2 - The Hospital FileThe drive to St. Matthew’s Hospital lasted fourteen minutes.

For Emma, it felt like hours.

Daniel sat beside her in the ambulance, one hand holding hers while the other rested carefully near her shoulder.

Every few minutes, a contraction tightened across her abdomen.

“Look at me,” Daniel said.

Emma tried.

“Breathe.”

“I am breathing.”

“You’re yelling.”

“That counts as breathing.”

He almost smiled.

Almost.

Then she saw the fear in his eyes.

“Daniel.”

“I’m here.”

“Don’t let them near me.”

He understood immediately.

“My parents?”

She nodded.

“They won’t come near you.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

The emergency maternity team rushed Emma into labor and delivery.

Doctors worked quickly.

Medication was given to slow the contractions.

A steroid injection was administered to help the baby’s lungs mature in case delivery could not be delayed.

Hours passed.

By midnight, the contractions had begun to ease.

The baby’s heart rate remained strong.

Emma finally exhaled.

“He’s okay?”

Dr. Melissa Carter nodded.

“For now, yes.”

“For now?”

“We need to watch you overnight.”

Emma closed her eyes.

Daniel kissed her hand.

“I’m staying.”

Dr. Carter looked at him.

“You should.”

The words carried no accusation.

But Daniel felt one anyway.

He should have protected Emma.

He should have seen what his parents were doing.

He had dismissed Margaret’s questions.

Ignored Robert’s coldness.

Told himself they would adjust once the baby arrived.

Instead, they had stolen Emma’s records.

Tested his child’s paternity without consent.

Planned something called Phase Two.

Daniel pulled a chair close to the bed.

Emma looked at him.

“You’re angry.”

“I am.”

“At me?”

His face changed.

“No.”

“You barely said anything in the ambulance.”

“Because if I started talking, I was afraid I’d say something I couldn’t take back.”

“To who?”

“My parents.”

Emma turned toward the dark window.

Christmas lights from the hospital courtyard reflected in the glass.

“They hate me.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“They don’t get to decide who belongs in my family.”

“They think I married you for money.”

“They’ve thought that about everyone who wasn’t born with money.”

Emma looked at him.

“Do you?”

“What?”

“Think that?”

Daniel stared.

“No.”

“Not even once?”

“No.”

“You never wondered?”

“I wondered why someone like you tolerated someone like me.”

She smiled weakly.

“Terrible answer.”

“Accurate answer.”

Emma’s eyes filled.

Daniel moved closer.

“I know why you married me.”

“Why?”

“Because I make excellent pancakes.”

She laughed despite herself.

“Idiot.”

“And because you love me.”

“I do.”

“I love you too.”

He hesitated.

“Which is why I need to tell you something.”

Emma’s smile faded.

“What?”

“The trust.”

“I know about the trust.”

“Not all of it.”

Daniel looked toward the door.

“My grandfather’s trust gives me controlling interest in Harrison Development after the birth of my first biological child.”

Emma nodded.

“But there’s another clause.”

“What clause?”

“If I die before the child is born, my father retains control.”

Emma’s expression changed.

“And if the child is born?”

“The voting shares move into a protected trust for me and the child.”

She stared.

“So your parents lose control.”

“Yes.”

“How much money are we talking about?”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“Not just money.”

“Daniel.”

“Roughly four hundred million dollars in voting equity.”

Emma went silent.

Then she gave a strange laugh.

“I was worried about the nursery budget.”

“I know.”

“You’re telling me your parents could lose control of four hundred million dollars because our baby exists?”

“Yes.”

“That explains the paternity test.”

“It might.”

“What does Phase Two mean?”

“I don’t know.”

Emma studied him.

“Do you trust them?”

He looked down.

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Emma noticed.

“How long have you not trusted them?”

Daniel leaned back.

“My father has controlled the company since Grandpa died.”

“And?”

“He expected me to sign a restructuring agreement before the baby was born.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because it would have transferred most voting control to him permanently.”

Emma’s eyes narrowed.

“He asked you to give away your inheritance.”

“He called it stabilizing leadership.”

“What did you call it?”

“Extortion with a fountain pen.”

Emma would normally have laughed.

Instead, she looked toward the medical file on the bedside table.

Daniel had brought it from the house.

“Where did they get those records?”

“I’m going to find out.”

A knock came.

A nurse entered.

“There’s a visitor for you.”

Daniel stood.

“Who?”

“Margaret Harrison.”

“No.”

Emma answered first.

The nurse nodded.

“I’ll tell security.”

Before she could leave, Margaret’s voice came from the hallway.

“Daniel!”

He stepped into the corridor.

Margaret stood twenty feet away beside a security officer.

She looked smaller than she had at home.

More desperate.

“Please.”

Daniel walked toward her.

“You need to leave.”

“Your father made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

“He should not have touched Emma.”

“No.”

“He panicked.”

“That makes it worse.”

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

“You don’t know what she has done.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“She hasn’t done anything.”

“She met with your grandfather before he died.”

Daniel froze.

“What?”

Margaret reached into her purse.

She pulled out a photograph.

William Harrison sat in a restaurant booth.

Across from him was Emma.

The photo was dated eighteen months earlier.

Three months before Daniel and Emma’s wedding.

Daniel stared.

“You knew Grandpa?”

Emma’s voice came from behind him.

Daniel turned.

She had stepped into the hallway wearing a hospital robe beneath a blanket.

Her face had gone pale.

Margaret looked at her.

“Tell him.”

Daniel’s eyes returned to his wife.

“Emma?”

She whispered, “I was going to.”

“What?”

“I met your grandfather once.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“Once?”

Emma looked at her.

“Once.”

“He changed his trust two days later.”

Daniel stared at Emma.

“Is that true?”

“Yes.”

He took a step back.

“What did you talk about?”

Emma’s eyes filled.

“My mother.”

Daniel frowned.

“Your mother?”

“She worked for him.”

Margaret went silent.

Daniel looked from one woman to the other.

“Why have I never heard this?”

Emma’s voice broke.

“Because my mother made me promise never to tell anyone in your family.”

Daniel stared.

“Why?”

Emma swallowed.

“Because she said Robert Harrison ruined her life.”

Margaret’s face changed instantly.

Daniel saw it.

“Mom?”

Margaret looked away.

Emma continued.

“My mother died thinking your father had stolen something from her.”

“What?”

Emma looked at Daniel.

“Her child.”

The hallway seemed to tilt.

Daniel whispered, “What are you talking about?”

Emma’s hands trembled.

“My mother had another baby before me.”

Margaret suddenly said, “Stop.”

Emma turned.

“You knew.”

Margaret’s face went white.

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Knew what?”

Emma stared directly at Margaret.

“That my mother believed Robert took her firstborn son and gave him to another family.”

Daniel’s expression changed.

Margaret stepped backward.

“No.”

May you like

Emma whispered:

“And she believed that child grew up inside the Harrison family.”
