Chapter 2

Chapter 2
Preston stood frozen.
Dr. Reed's eyes never left him.
"You thought you married a quiet nobody from the suburbs," he said evenly. "Allow me to introduce her properly."
He stepped beside Ava.
"This is Ava Whitmore."
He paused.
"As in the Whitmore Medical Group."
A murmur spread through the emergency department.
"Her family owns this hospital," Dr. Reed continued. "They own the land it stands on, the network that operates it, and the medical license under which you practice."
The color drained from Preston's face.
His mouth opened, but no words came out.
The woman he had mocked for years...
The woman he had treated as insignificant...
The woman he had humiliated in front of dozens of doctors and nurses...
Was the heiress to the very empire that paid his salary.
In that single moment, everything Preston had spent years building began to collapse.
The hospital's chief legal counsel, Daniel Brooks, stepped forward carrying a thick leather folder.
He placed it on the nurses' station.
"I believe these belong to you, Dr. Hayes."
Preston stared at him.
"What is this?"
Daniel calmly opened the folder.
"Divorce papers."
He placed the first document on the counter.
Then another.
"And these are the financial audit reports."
Another stack.
"Evidence of unauthorized transfers."
Another.
"Insurance fraud."
Another.
"Records of unnecessary surgical procedures billed to patients."
Finally, he placed one last file on top.
"Every piece of evidence Mrs. Whitmore has quietly collected over the past several weeks."
The room was silent.
Preston looked at Ava in disbelief.
"You... you were spying on me?"
Ava slowly met his eyes.
"No."
"I was giving you every opportunity to stop."
His breathing became uneven.
"You set me up!"
"I gave you chances."
"You planned this!"
"I hoped you would change."
His voice rose.
"This is all your fault!"
He took a sudden step toward her.
"You can't do this to me!"
His hand reached for her shoulder.
Officer Grant intercepted him before he could touch her.
The veteran hospital security officer grabbed Preston's wrist and twisted it away.
"That's enough."
Preston struggled.
"Let go of me!"
Officer Grant's expression never changed.
"Not another step."
Preston looked around desperately.
No one moved to help him.
Not the residents who once admired him.
Not the nurses who had obeyed his orders.
Not even the attending physicians.
Every face in the room reflected the same emotion.
Disgust.
For the first time in years, Preston Hayes stood completely alone.
Then, without warning, Ava gasped.
Her face turned pale.
She doubled over, clutching her stomach.
A sharp cry escaped her lips.
"No..."
Blood began soaking through the front of her clothes.
She collapsed.
Everything changed in an instant.
This was no longer about reputations.
Or lawsuits.
Or careers.
It had become a fight for two lives.
"Trauma Room One!" I shouted.
"Move!"
Within seconds, the emergency team rushed into motion.
We lifted Ava onto a stretcher and raced her down the hallway.
Someone called Obstetrics.
Someone activated the massive transfusion protocol.
Someone notified the operating room.
The monitors screamed as we rolled through the doors.
Her blood pressure was crashing.
The fetal heart monitor searched desperately for a heartbeat.
Then...
Silence.
No fetal heartbeat.
Dr. Linda Evans from Obstetrics arrived at a run.
She looked at the monitor once.
Then at Ava.
"We're losing both of them."
She turned to the team.
"Emergency C-section."
"Right here."
May you like
"Now."
