Chapter 5 - Frozen Secrets, Thawing TruthBy Friday evening, the financial walls were beginning to close in around Vanessa Cole’s family.

Using my authority as the sole trustee of my late father’s multi-million-dollar investment firm, Vance & Associates, I executed an immediate freeze on the three primary commercial lines of credit that Cole Logistics relied on to fund their shipping fleet.

Vanessa’s father, Charles Cole, was a powerful, arrogant man who had spent decades buying his way out of legal trouble. But he had never faced a forensic accountant with a personal vendetta.

At 7:00 PM, my private phone buzzed with an incoming call from an restricted number. I answered, putting it on speaker as I sat in my empty living room, surrounded by my daughters' untouched toys.

"Sarah Mercer?" a deep, harsh voice growled through the line. It was Charles Cole.

"Speaking," I said calmly.

"You have twenty-four hours to remove the freeze on my company's credit lines, lady," Charles hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of corporate rage and panic. "My shipping containers are currently sitting on the docks in Seattle, costing me fifty thousand dollars a day in penalties. My daughter is an innocent woman who is being framed by your corrupt police friends because you can't accept that your husband wanted to leave you!"

"Your daughter is a murderer, Charles," I said, my voice dropping into a low, terrifying pitch that made the line go completely silent. "She used your company's logistics software to remotely disable the brakes on my car while my three-year-old twins were inside. I have the unedited cloud recording from the babysitter's tablet. I have the IP addresses tracing back to the penthouse Daniel bought for her with my money."

"That... that's a lie," Charles stammered, his confident tone instantly evaporating.

"The federal grand jury just issued a primary indictment for corporate espionage, federal wire fraud, and capital murder against your daughter and Daniel twenty minutes ago," I continued, leaning forward. "And tomorrow morning, my legal team is filing a formal petition to foreclose on your company’s assets. Since Cole Logistics defaulted on its interest payments to my family's trust last month, I have the legal right to seize your entire fleet. You are bankrupt, Charles. Your daughter is going to death row, and you are going to spend the rest of your life in a cheap apartment, remembering the night your family decided to steal from me."

I pressed the red button on my screen, cutting off his frantic, desperate shouting before he could even reply.

I stood up and walked into my daughters’ bedroom. The room was dark, the twin small beds still made with their favorite pink sheets. I leaned against the doorframe, letting a single tear fall down my cheek. The ledgers are finally balanced, my sweet girls, I thought. Now, it’s time to close the book.
