Chapter 1 - The Call My Husband Made on the Walmart FloorMy husband slammed my eight-month-pregnant body into a checkout counter because I picked up a $14 baby blanket. As I crumpled to the floor, wrapping both arms around my stomach, he glared down at me and spat, “You selfish idiot! I’m not throwing my money away on useless baby stuff.”

He thought everyone would look away like they always did. Instead, the store manager stepped forward… and within minutes, a truth far darker than anyone expected began coming to light.

The sharp edge of the checkout counter drove into my stomach so hard that every sound around me disappeared.

For one terrifying second, all I could taste was blood.

Then came the pain.

It spread through my eight-month-pregnant belly so violently that my knees gave out beneath me.

I hit the polished floor in the middle of a busy Walmart outside Dallas while shoppers froze with overflowing carts and frightened expressions.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

My husband stood over me breathing heavily, his face twisted with anger instead of concern.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” David snapped. “Fourteen dollars for a blanket? Do you think money grows on trees?”

My fingers instinctively wrapped around my stomach.

Our son kicked once.

Then everything inside me tightened with fear.

The blanket was still lying on the floor a few feet away.

Soft.

Blue.

Covered with tiny white stars.

I had picked it up because it reminded me of the nursery we had been planning before David suddenly decided every purchase for the baby was “a waste of his money.”

He adjusted the collar of his expensive polo shirt as though nothing unusual had happened.

“Get up,” he hissed. “People are staring.”

I tried.

The pain shot through my abdomen again.

Tears blurred my vision.

Around us, customers looked horrified, but nobody seemed to know what to do.

One elderly woman covered her mouth.

A young cashier reached for the phone beneath the register.

David noticed.

“Mind your own business,” he barked.

Then he took one threatening step toward me.

His arm started to rise.

I honestly believed he was about to hit me again.

But before he could move another inch, an enormous shadow fell across the checkout lanes.

“That’s enough.”

The voice was calm.

Deep.

Impossible to ignore.

David slowly turned around.

Standing behind him was Wyatt, the store manager.

He was easily the biggest man in the building, broad-shouldered, heavily built, with a thick red beard and the quiet confidence of someone who didn’t need to raise his voice to be taken seriously.

He looked once at me.

Then at my swollen stomach.

Then back at David.

“Step away from her.”

David forced a laugh.

“This is between me and my wife.”

Wyatt didn’t move.

“It stopped being private the moment you assaulted a pregnant woman in front of half my store.”

For the first time since I had met him, I watched confidence disappear from David’s face.

He reached into his pocket, pulled out his phone with shaking hands, and quickly dialed a number.

He wasn’t calling 911.

He wasn’t calling an attorney.

He lowered his voice and whispered into the phone with unmistakable panic.

“If they find out… we’re finished.”
