Chapter 2 - The Fight for Two Lives

The silence that followed the departure of the car was a physical weight, pressing down on the cold marble floor. I was entirely alone, trapped inside a house that my own hard work had purchased, locked in by the people who claimed to love me.

Another contraction gripped my body, so intense that my vision began to tunnel into blackness. “My baby,” I whispered, my hand clawing at my swollen belly. “I have to save my baby.”

My phone was across the room, sitting securely on the kitchen island. The distance looked like a vast desert. I began to drag myself across the floor, my knees scraping against the hard stone, my breath coming in ragged, shallow wheezes. Every inch was a battle against the agony expanding in my pelvis.

With a final, desperate heave, I reached up, my fingers brushing against the edge of the marble island, and knocked the phone down. It clattered to the floor beside my face.

I immediately dialed 911.

"911, what is your emergency?" the operator’s calm voice filled the quiet room.

"I’m thirty-eight weeks pregnant," I gasped, tears streaming down my face. "My water broke... labor is moving too fast. My husband... he locked me in the house from the outside. I can’t open the doors. Please, you have to help me."

"Ma'am, keep breathing. I’m dispatching paramedics and a police unit to your location right now. Can you tell me your address?"

After giving the operator the details, I hung up and dialed Chloe, my closest friend and a sharp corporate attorney. Chloe had warned me about Marcos and his mother for years. I had spent our entire marriage defending them, trying to buy their affection with luxury gifts and endless financial support.

When she answered, she heard my ragged breathing and immediately went into a panic. "Elena? What’s wrong?"

"Chloe... they left," I whispered, a fresh wave of tears blinding me. "Marcos and Pilar. They went to Miami. They locked both deadbolts from the outside. I’m in active labor on the floor."

"They what?" Chloe’s voice shook with a fury I had never heard before. "Those absolute monsters! Elena, stay on the line with me. The paramedics will have to break the door down, but I am driving to your house right now. Don't you dare close your eyes."

As the distant wail of sirens began to echo through the quiet suburban neighborhood, I closed my eyes, clutching my stomach. The woman who had tolerated their emotional parasitic drain was officially gone.
