Chapter 5 - The Unraveling of RayFollowing their dramatic arrest at the county clerk’s office, Ray and Daniel were transported to the Erie County Holding Center, held without bail pending their formal arraignment.

Stripped of their expensive clothes, credit cards, and arrogance, their fragile criminal alliance disintegrated completely within twelve hours.
Inside Interrogation Room 3, Daniel sat under the harsh glare of fluorescent lights, weeping hysterically to Assistant DA Sarah Jenkins and my legal officer, Marcus Vance.
“I’ll tell you everything!” Daniel sobbed, wiping his nose on the sleeve of his jail jumpsuit. “I’ll testify against Ray! Just please don't send me to a maximum-security prison!”
Marcus adjusted his glasses, tapping a pen against his notepad. “Start from the beginning, Daniel. How long has Ray been poisoning your mother?”
“Six months!” Daniel blurted out frantically. “It started when his gambling debts got out of hand! He found a rogue nurse at a private clinic who sold him liquid Haldol under the table! He’d mix it into Mom’s evening tea every night so she’d get confused and forgetful!”
In the adjacent interrogation room, Ray was attempting a different strategy—claiming he was a loving husband who was being framed by his ungrateful stepdaughter.
However, my forensic team at Northstar had already dismantled his defense.
By Friday afternoon, we uncovered a secondary paper trail showing that Ray had taken out a one-million-dollar accidental death life insurance policy on my mother six months ago—a policy that contained a specific clause paying double in the event of death due to "accidental environmental exposure."
He hadn't just left her outside in the blizzard to intimidate her. He had left her outside in twenty-degree weather, barefoot, expecting her to freeze to death before sunrise so he could collect two million dollars in insurance payouts.
When Sarah Jenkins laid the certified life insurance policy on the table in front of Ray, the old man’s face turned a sickening, corpse-like shade of grey.
“This is an attempted murder charge, Mr. Vance,” Sarah said, her voice dropping into a deadly quiet register. “And under New York state law, attempted murder of a vulnerable adult carries a mandatory minimum sentence of twenty-five years to life.”
Ray collapsed back in his chair, his hands shaking violently inside his handcuffs, unable to utter a single word of denial.

I watched through the one-way glass mirror from the observation room, taking a slow, deep breath.
The monsters who had tried to erase my mother were finally caught in the trap of their own greed.
